San Diego Comic-Con 2014 SDCC

Was everyone successful at getting hotels? My brother and I both book separately every year, and we have always both received word back that we had secured a room. Well, this year my brother received an email stating that all the hotels were sold out, and I received an email with a booking of a hotel about a mile away- not one of my first sicx choices that they asked for (for the last few years we have been lucky and have stayed at the Marriot adjacent to the convention center or the Manchester Hyatt). We both completed the online form with about four minutes of them going online at 9:00 a.m. Crazy!

I completed the form in 5-6 minutes and got a back up hotel 5 miles away...I cancelled that and I will wait until about 5 days before the con to secure a room.

I was told that if you didn't get your hotel form sent in under 2 minutes you didn't get a hotel.
I'm out in mission valley, this is the first time I didn't get any of my choices. I normally get my first or second choice.

Letting people book up to 9 rooms seems a little excessive. If they limited it to just ONE room, and you had to pay for it in advance or don't get it at all; that would avoid this hotel scramble.

I didn't get any but my friend got one 6 miles away. :(

Jedifyfe has that strategy to wait 5 days before work for you successfully in the past? Seems really risky that late prior to the event.

Agreed 2 rooms would be reasonable.

Ive vet never tried it yet but last year I saw a ton of hotel rooms open up at the hard rock an marriott 2 days prior to the con for normal prices. I'll take my chances this year, since I'm only going for 1 day.

I'm grateful for being able to make the drive down each year, because it means I can stay pretty much anywhere around the area. So I typically book my room for the next year as soon as I can once returning from the con. A fair number of times, I'm able to get in to a hotel before they've put the convention prices in. The last three years I've stayed just north of the con, about a 10 minute drive in (near Phil's BBQ :)). This year I'm actually staying about 10 minutes south because I was able to get a room for $340 for six nights. Even with paying for parking under the center, it'll be about $400. Add in gas cost and it's around $600, so still coming in around $100 a night total.

I used to fly in, but once the hotel prices started skyrocketing, staying in walking distance was no longer an option for me. Basically, once the Motel 6 on 2nd started charging $150 a night (they charge more now), I knew I was going to be driving every year. I think it's really horrible for people that don't have that option. A lot my friends that fly in end up staying four or five to a hotel room and sleeping on the floor just to be able to afford to stay downtown. :(

A heads up for those of you that were able to lock down a hotel during Hotelpocolypse. I ran into an issue with the 72 hour window they open once your hotel is determined. If you don't place your deposit within 72 hours of receiving your hotel notification, your reservation is considered forfeited. When entering my reservation number via Travel Planners, it wasn't allowing me to submit my credit card number to place my deposit, the entry fields were not displaying. It simply said, "Deposit Due." When I called Travel Planners that following Monday, they mentioned that the deposit portion has been getting bombarded with tons of traffic, rendering the deposit section unavailable. The person on the phone was able to take my deposit, sending email confirmation instantly.

So i did the 2nd go around for the hotels last Wed and got a reservation finally and really great price for 4 days. Does the Comic Con reservations guarantee a hotel? Since this is my first time doing this. And i put my card info and all that so i would think i would for sure have a hotel, or is it a 50/50 chance on not getting one?

I wasn't able to secure a badge this year, but I live about 15 miles from the convention center so I'm going anyways. There is always plenty to do outside the convention halls. I'll go in costume so long as I get it finished in time.

From my experience the Comic Con reservation guarantees a hotel. The first year I went they overbooked my original hotel so they moved me to a different hotel that was a lot closer. Originally they wanted to split my hotel stay between the original hotel and a new hotel, but after a brief discussion I was able to stay in one hotel for the entire Con.

Endo500 there is a facebook group for SDCC cosplay. Ill get you the link. There is a huge marvel and DC photoshoot each year.

Whispers pssst.... I live in SD. Secret to hotels book your hotel in december before the comic con block. The hotels down there are owned by a union so once comic con posts there hotel info your stuck. Before then things are normal through expedia and hotels.com etc. Prices are also normal and not hiked up.

This is true. I Go every year. Now there are so many parties and extra events going on that you dont even need a ticket to have fun. Lots of people just go and do the things outside since panels are full anymore and its wall to wall with people inside.

The concerts that the San diego orchestra throw are always fun too. Cheap Tickets. They had the final fantasy one last year. This year its video games live.

I dont think that works anymore. I've tried to book rooms back in November and the weekend that SDCC is, was blocked already.

Same here i don't think that works anymore. I remember calling one place one time back in Jan and they gave me rates for that weekend for like $2,000 a night downtown. So either way you have to pay the Comic Con weekend price even if you book a year ahead which sucks.

It still works. Since its a union you just need to know who to talk to who runs it etc. Got my room at the hard rock for 89 a night in December for this year.

If you need help for next year let me know. Id be glad to hook you up.

Nice man if it's the Hard Rock basically across the street you got a super good deal.

Yeah if you can help me out next year that be cool. So far i got a hotel 4 miles away and i'm paying more then you at least by $100 extra.

Question for you guys who have been there before: how strict is comic con about the user of the ticket?

The reason I ask is this-- unfortunately, my girlfriend and I broke up recently and for now the plan was to try and find someone else to go, but her name is attached to hers and the service rep I spoke to said it was against policy to transfer it to someone else.

Is it impossible to bring someone else? Am I screwed out of that money?

I have a buddy who knows I've gone to SDCC several times ask if I was going this year but I'm not.

He was hoping to get the SDCC exclusive Hasbro Black 6 inch Jabba the Hut figure. If anyone who is going thought for sure they could get one for me to pass along to my friend please PM me. I could PayPal the price plus a 'finders fee' for your time, plus shipping.
