I came across the Rubies Clone Trooper blaster yesterday. At first, I glanced at it, laughed and kept walking but my wife wanted to look at something in the Halloween isle at Wal-Mart so ended up taking a second look at it.
At first, I was completely unimpressed. My first impression was that it was a modified Hasbro casting. It was roughly the same length and had the same blue, silver and orange paint job. Though after actually picking it up, I realized that it's an entirely new sculpt and...I can't believe I'm going to say this....Rubies actually did pretty good for once. I didn't think so at first. I thought it was overly simple and way too small but then I noticed the picture on the package. This is actually based on the new animated version on the Clone Blaster and I gotta say, it's pretty damn close. The animated blasters seem to have been scaled down by quite a bit so at 20" the toy is only a couple of inches short. Most of the details are actually pretty much dead on. My only real complaint in the "folding stock" there's no angle to it's attachment, so it runs parallel to the barrel.
It's also got something that the Hasbro blaster lacked. Sound. I got it home and saw the battery compartment. Popped in a couple of AAAs and it makes a nice double blast sound.
So, here are the pics.
and here's a shot of it next to a resin AOTC style I'm working on...
So, I know it's Rubies and they're evil but this thing is pretty damn great for $8.50. I think kids would much prefer this one over the ugly, soundless Hasbro version. $8.50 for a pretty accurate blaster with sound or $20 for a skinny, oddly detailed nerf gun with a blinky light. You decide :lol
Anyway, I don't know if anyone really cares about this piece or not but I was impressed (a huge shock to be sure) and I figured I'd spread the word :lol
