RS Prop Masters 10th Anniversary Stunt Helmet

Yeah I wouldn't think the cost of materials and base paint would add that much more to the price but Idk. Unless this is a limited edition? But even then their Hero helmets weren't this much.

To put things into perspective...

Anon's "SFS" HDPE raw cast only costs around $200.
RS's finished HDPE is around $650.

Is the finishing worth $450?
I'm not so sure, considering the inconsistent finishing work I've seen recently from RS.

I sure would have preferred an option for a raw HDPE cast from RS.

The HDPE is apparently much more difficult to locate these days as it’s not commonly used anymore. They located this batch from Germany.

Why are they so much more than their standard ABS stunt? Is using HDPE a more involved process?

Yes, I think it is the cost of finding an exact colour match and thicknees of HDPE to the originals.

I have two kit versions of their HDPE Stunts from a long time ago that I have not built yet. Need to decide if I want one more built/ painted one. Is it going to be built/ painted to a specific Trooper or is it going to be a generic one? If generic I would just want an unpainted one.

That does sound like a lot for standard finishing work.

Just remember HDPE is 'squishier' so what's the paint gonna do over time or if it is flexed? They state that a red primer coat will be applied. I do want one but as usual the price stops me. Unless I talk myself into it. Lol! If you get right down to it, it should look just like their regular helmets. It'll just be green on the inside.

The HDPE in the correct RAL (European colour chart) shade of green (yellow green) was discontinued some time ago but was around in the 70s in the UK. They are limited in how many HDPE helmets they can release as it takes some detective work to track down old stock of this colour HDPE. That's why they don't have this version available normally, it is basically a limited edition item due to this. It is also impossible to know their material costs as what they're using isn't conventionally available anymore. The replica set for stun helmet isn't the same colour, as far as I'm aware.

The colour is important, as much like the original helmets, the white paint will chip off very easily and reveal what is underneath. There is a disclaimer on the RS site that states this. It is a major disadvantage to the HDPE helmet which means only the most obsessed ANH trooper collectors would want this, general collectors are probably better off with the ABS.

I got an ABS and just painted it with white enamel, feels real but won't chip or flake.

Actually that was their original sales pitch, however the reality is that is incorrect. The plastic they are using is still manufactured in RAL 7032 (what they are using) by many companies still to this day. It is not expensive or hard to get. Companies in Germany still manufacturer it and export it all around the globe. It's most commonly used in industrial processing and for water/chemical tanks.

I'm surprised that they mentioned August as a shipping date. Considering they will need to paint the whole helmet. The first run of Hero's took a long time (still waiting for mine) and those required much less finishing/paintwork compared to a "HDPE" stunt.

These are not going to be sand trooper helmets. The only difference between the two are the additional paint details.

I just wonder how weathered the weathered versions will be. If you rush it through assembly line-style, it could look bad.

I also wonder if they will still have that crushed look underneath one of the tubes. I know their original helmet had it but it is annoying.

The weathered part is up to you. You can ask for minor paint chipping, a lot of paint chipping, or like someone asked for during the last run - a replica of a 43 year old stormtrooper helmet. Which was bloody awesome.

Here's weathered from the last HDPE run.

TK's just don't get any better than this HDPE copy - but you're not going to wear them trooping.

The paint job I received from my Anon was pathetic. The paint started melting/turned soft and started sticking to the rubber trim. The brow was a freaking mess.

Anon's pulls lacked detail, and the painting was too thick.

RS's finishing is definitely worth $650, because the pull is worth more than the Anon, and the paint work is worth FAR more than Anon's.

That all said, I love the shape of the Anon ESB with screen printed tube stripes I received from Juan Fernandez. It's a beautiful helmet.

incredible...

My only point of note in the RS versus SFS helmets is one is a vac form from the inside of a faceplate (most accurate way to do it to get to original buck) and one is a scan of the outside including paint (so it will have artifacts that are external to one specific helmet).
