Round2 Acquires Star Wars License

That TIE looks fantastic, and seems to come with some photoetch to light up the interior panels. I'm definitely going to get that one. Would be tempted to get another and 3D print some wings to make the Interceptor in the same scale.

Ironic that I'm in the middle of a Black Series 1/12 landspeeder repaint and now they're issuing a kit! Oh well, gonna have to pick one of those up AND the Tie Bomber. Hope the bomber is 1/32 scale........

The Falcon retooled looks too flat to me, and the sidewalls STILL seem like 5 - 10% too thick... is it just this picture?
The MPC MF was always too flat, so much so that many/most can't unsee it. The design of the kit allows modelers to people to cut it up a bit and put a spacer and get better curvature--whereas the FM kit, with the same issue, is nearly impossible. Never expected R2 to redo the molds in that way. And basically, for me, the kit has been a non-starter since R2 started talking about re-doing the sidewalls. It looks better, but really, to me, it looks a little less like crap.

I had the kit as a kid, and even back then it looked lame, despite putting a lot of effort into it. It amazes me that they made the effort to kinda correct the side walls, and yet, they neglected to correct the size of the cockpit pod and tunnel- no matter what you do, that aspect ruins the model for me. It’s still a crappy model and now way too much money for what it is

I'd be willing to bet the TIE Bomber will be in 1/48 to go with the 1/48 TIE and Interceptor reissues. 1/32 would just be too huge to justify the cost for such a niche subject. But I'm very excited we're finally getting an injection-molded bomber.

The only problem with that is, the existing TIE isn't even close to 1/48, given their choice of 13.5 inches for 1/32. That would make 1/48 nine inch tall, not six.

Edit: Given that, the existing AMT kits are 1/72.

Here is the Q&A with Jamie from Wonderfest 2023

He is joined by Jay Chladek, somewhere in the middle.

I would imagine for the TIE Bomber they would leverage the DV TIE wings that were used to make the filming miniature,so whatever scale that would be.

Maybe for reference. I don’t think they will rework the moulds as they are pretty worn out.

At least if they do, the model will be studio scale.

The molds are still being used for the most recent re release of the DV TIE I thought. I just meant they would package those wings with the kiT rather than tool up new ones. At least,I hope they do,they would already be screen accurate! Lol,they’ll mess it up and make it some dang box scale. I kid, that TIE fighter is impressive. Needs an in scale X and Y. And A. And B. And interceptor. It’s a sickness.

It feels like there's a new version of "box scale." As some have pointed out, R2 is already hosing up the accuracy of the size of kits labeled with a scale. As has been pointed out (I think), the TIE is not the indicated scale, and then they run with that "scale" for fellow kits. We saw that with the Bandai A-Wing--labeled as 1/72, close enough to 1/48 for some. And the Snowspeeder. It's basically impossible to make that kit the correct scale with accurately scaled figures that actually fit. At least, maybe, we have to be happy with kits that can sit next to each other and look right together. Which is an improvement over traditional box scale.

Seems to me like a studio scale TIE Bomber is a no brainer. They have the X-1 wing panels and windscreen frame, and they can get part IDs on all the other donor kits for 100% accuracy. I'm not as concerned about scale as others are, but making it true "studio scale" would be more exciting to me than making it adhere to any other established scale.

I have a Revell landspeeder kit I was planning to accurize someday, so I'm hoping the new kit will help avoid all that. The subject is kinda meh for me, and I can think of a dozen other subjects that I'd prefer out of a new tool kit, but if it's nice...

The Death Star repop is of no interest to me whatsoever, regardless of improvements. It's polishing a turd -- and that's being generous. You'd get a more accurate DS by simply hunting down plexiglass hemispheres (I found some 14" ones for $10), sticking a light inside, and using a pin to scrape little holes to make the surface lights. A better repop would be the ROTS Jedi starfighter. Add an Anakin or Obi-Wan figure and it's a great kit.

The issue with using the existing wings from Vader's TIE, is the bomber frames were extended, in all directions. So, you really can't just reuse the existing mold.

I don't think R2 should use the existing wings in the new bomber kit, but they could use them as 100% accurate references when tooling the new extended wings.

The other obvious scale option for me would make the bomber the same "scale" as the standard 1/48ish TIE and TIE Interceptor kits. It's a much smaller kit, but one that would be affordable to buy multiple kits.

R2 should also absolutely make the wings reversible to convert the bomber into Captain Needa's shuttle in TESB.

I don’t see a reason they could not make the extensions. Most expensive part for them is tooling and not re tooling what they have may be part of their equation. I had assumed the Falcon sidewalls would be resin, again a cheaper way for them to make the parts without machining, hence everything else is identical. But I don’t know, just spitballing. To me,doesn’t make sense to reinvent the wheel, especially given the ‘accuracy’ crowd. StudioS ale and at least 1 portion 100% accurate? Seems win win to me.
