After completing my Rocketeer harness buckle, I decided that it was time to start looking into building the actual rocket pack as well. As I mentioned in my other thread about how this has been one of my dream projects, I was determined to make this a reality.

Rather than render a pack myself, I started looking into kits and posisbly 3d models. I was able to find a resin kit from Monsters in Motion, but much to my dismay, the raw kit costs nearly $1,000. $1,000 is pretty much out of my budget. So… back to my searches.

I finally came across a very high quality 3D file which was built by Dan Vinson of Aperio. Not only had he taken the time to render the exterior of the rocketpack, but designed the internal components as well. Granted this didn’t quite match up exactly with the blueprint shown in the film, but for a prop builder who plans on 3D printing, this was ideal for me.

Unfortunately Dan had experienced what many folks in the prop/cosplay community have had happen to them… someone selling your work as theirs, or giving it away for free. Sadly some people feel that once they purchase a 3D file, that they can give it away freely, or make a profit off of it without discussing things with the artist prior. Most 3D artists that I have spoke with are usually okay with people building their designs and then making molds and cast copies. They simply want the credit for making the file; while some may require a small compensation. In the case of Dan though, he got burnt and pulled his files from the web. Only the images of the file remained.

I was lucky enough to have the contact resources to reach out to Dan and discuss a collaboration for this project. After a couple emails and phone calls, we hit it off and he agreed to allow me to use his files to 3D print his Rocketpack. Thankfully he had seen my recent work on the buckle and Zorg ZF-1, that he was confident in my skills, to do this project justice.

Right now, my task is to take the 3d files, check scale and slice them up in a way where I can print them and assemble them to make a complete rocketpack.

    Stay Tuned!

Ok now that I'm not at work and have to sneak therpf, I want to say : Based on your work on the buckle I have no doubt you'll knock this out of the park and I look forward to watching this thread develop.

Granted even if this is sliced and printed doing it from shape ways will still probably come out to a grand lol

I have a Makerbot Replicator 2, the cost of the filament will be between 28 and 50 bucks. The cost is gonna be the metal plating

The pack has been scaled to accurate size and now I'm breaking things down so I can fit them on my printer.

If someone can pull this out it's certainly you (that buckle was gold:cool) If you arrive at less than a grand, then count me in to buy one pack!

If he gives permission to use the files I would love to print one, my davinci and I have been waiting for a new project :). Could always print this in the brass or bronze Pla, but that would up the cost substantially

Is that the plan, AGFRX7? Will you be printing these for people?

If not, would your edited files be available?

Sorry guys but as I mentioned in an earlier post, I am under contract with the artist not to make any duplicates or disperse the files. Maybe he'll change his mind.

Darn. Well, all the best with it. If things change definitely keep us in the loop. Looks to me like you would have several people interested (even if for just a small run). The jetpack is the hardest piece of the costume to come by affordably and accurately.

Both nose cones, fuselage bulges, cone spacers and cone fins are 3d printed. Started printing up the left fuselage this morning.

I spoke with the Artist this morning and told him about the excitement from all of those watching this thread and other social media outlets. I expressed to him that some would be willing to pay money for either a kit and or 3d print files. He is thinking it over. So no promises but I at least asked :)

This looks amazing, can't wait to see more.

I was curious, what diameter did you get for the rocket tubes, the old kits had 7.25inch OD, and maybe its because I'm not seeing it in person, but it just seems large. Did you ever feel it was too large until you printed it?

I used the measurements that are floating around here on the rpf... with the inside diameter of 7". It looked huge until I had more pieces together and I looked at more finished kits from MIM and the film.

That's what I was hoping, looking at it seems big, but you just can't argue with the info provided by the RPF, it is nearly infallible lol

Very cool, Being in Australia, a $1000usd pack from MIM, quickly becomes a $1800usd ($2500aud :( ) pack, with shipping, import taxes and conversion rates. Would so love to have the opportunity to print one of these. If I knew it existed, I would have saved the files for when my printer arrives. I hope Dan has the heart to help share some Rocketeer love to honest builders who'd appreciate the work that's gone into it. :D

I remember finding that same kit for $1,000. I want to do a Rocketeer so badly, but $1,000! I'm eager to see this completed. Looks awesome so far!

This is amazing! I'm currently doing a Rocketeer build myself (should probably make a thread on it). Watching this thread to see what the artist says. Already have PVC tubes and a 3D model of the center pieces, but if 3D models of the cones and the like were made available, that'd make my pack so much easier to build. Either way, keep up the awesome job.

Okay... Now that I'm back from salt lake comic con and fully rested, it's back to work time. I started sanding, filling and priming pieces in addition to printing up more parts.
