Robotic spirit of Light - Zenia - Completed

Hello there.

For those of you who didn't already know, I have built another female robot statue in the past named Cyrah. The reason why I built this was because I needed a mannequin for my female Tusken Raider costume since I'm a guy who doesn't want to wear women's clothing and so forth... The rest of the story why I had to build her can be seen here - www.DarkSideSithLord.com - My Custom Creations - Cyrah

And now I am building a female robot statue again, but this time it is not because I need it for a costume now that I have Cyrah for that, but having built Cyrah and made some futuristic sci-fi photos with her, I realized that building and photographing female robot statues was pretty darn cool, and I like the way they look too since I'm interested in robots in general. Since Cyrah was simply just a converted mannequin, it is very limited in movement so that all photos of her pretty much just show her standing there with different head and arm poses. I wanted to take more photos of her with my other robots and things like that, but since this will not be possible without photo editing, I started thinking about building another female robot statue completely from scratch with a fully articulated body this time.

I already had a styrofoam female head that I could not identify what-so-ever that had a very interesting and cute face, so I made a cast of it using clay as the mold and cast it in fiberglass. When building Cyrah, many people said they liked the sort of white "all is full of love music video" looking female robot instead of what I was building and that I should add lights inside of it, so this Android will look more like that this time.

Here is my first idea sketch (unfinished)
ZeniaSketch1.jpg

The full white look is still there, but I want her to look more like the female robot they used to show in those shaver commercials a while back since Zenia will also look Asian. Plus adding some purple lights and details will make her look a little like Wowwee's Femisapien robot too, which I also have here in my robot collection.

Good good. I've updated the first post with an unfinished sketch.

In all she will look like a mix between the standard white Android seen everywhere - - -

- - - the Android chick from those Philips shaver commercials - - -

Here is a sneak preview of her fiberglass face. It was cast in clay from a white styrofoam asian chick head that I can't seem to identify.

Some more building parts for this project was bought a while back now, so I might get to start on some of the parts soon, maybe the hands.

Hope ye all like.

Re: Female Android - Zenia

Hmm... the sketch is not as stylistically pleasing as your other creation or the pieces you show as inspirations for your new robot. The cut lines gives it a kind of clunkyness and disrupts the feminine shape and contours, making it very angular and male. Have you considered, if possible, curved cuts that follows the contours of the basic human skeletal shape - sorta like what is seen on some 12" figure bodies?

When doing female robotics always think soft, smooth, delicate. Anything edgy or hard reads as male. Also, the aesthetically pleasing face will look out of place on the type of body you have drawn in your sketch, especially concerned about the neck and shoulder area.

Just something to ponder.

Re: Female Android - Zenia

I haven't put much thought into that whole line idea and don't know what to put there either. Most of these lines were drawn fast in there today to show a more finished sketch, but I will now try to smooth it all off. I'm not that pleased with the shoulder and neck area myself, looks more like industrial riveted old crap...

I think I should just draw one part at a time and put that together to see what it looks like... Just reinvent the whole thing.

Thanks for the pointers.

Re: Female Android - Zenia

Actually... I kinda like the roughness of the facemask you've done... looks old and beaten up, like a robot that's been around for a long time and has seen a lot of action - maybe resurrected from a junk-pile. Would be interesting to see one done in a rusty old beaten up look with just hints of past perfection and smoothness.

Re: Female Android - Zenia

That's odd, I dreamt I was building one like that in the future that looked really rusty and weathered and just recently thought about that dream too when starting this project...

Maybe I was building it for you since you like that??

Re: Female Android - Zenia

Hmm... I just got the idea from looking at the face cast. Seeing her all rusty and damaged with only areas here and there showing her smooth white original surface look.

You could make a powerful display if you get that right.

Btw: what is the concept and history of the character... or will you just work and see what feels right, not working from any fixed plan?

Re: Female Android - Zenia

Yeah I get what you mean, but maybe that's for some other project in the future, who knows..

I didn't make any concepts or history for these characters because this way when people see the different photos of them, they will wonder about just that and imagive things for themselves, so they could either be in another dimention, cyberspace, a cyberspace within a cyberspace, or maybe even just floating around inside the IC of a Commodore 64 for all we know.

For Cyrah I just made one simple sketch and were sort of designing the whole thing while building it without any plan on what it should really look like, and it didn't turn out bad either, so perhaps I should just try that whole zen/chi/oohm way of building it as I go type of thing again. I'm just not sure if I will end up making a complete pile of dung once it's competed this time...

Maybe some sleep and pencil time tomorrow will help.

Re: Female Android - Zenia

Thanks.
Yeah I thought someone would bring out that video again ;)
Well I'm going to have two robot chicks here now, so who knows if they will turn out lesbian too...

Anyway, I thought that since I am going to light up her eyes and have all sorts of wires and cool stuff as her hair that I could also add some fiberoptic wires in there that will look awesome once lit by the 20 bright battery opperated LED's that I bought for this project. I was wondering what to do with all the unused LED's, then I noticed that the cool blue aliens of the new Avatar movie seem to have small glowing dot patterns all over their bodies and thought that this would also look really cool on this robot if I made this effect with fiberoptic wires. This would also solve the problem with unused LED's all over. So I guess I will have to buy another lamp now then.

Re: Female Android - Zenia

Awesome!!
An unusual project and a great achievement, chap!

Hey, in 20 years time, when you have figured out how to make them look and behave like humans, can I contract you for a couple of Female Android Character replicas?

Re: Female Android - Zenia

Thanks, man.

Well actually I am planning to make my own robotics company that will eventually make Androids, starting with the robot in my avatar, Modulus. The software to make robots act nearly humans already exist today, so I think what you are asking for will be possible in about 20 years time ;)

Re: Female Android - Zenia

Hello again.

Some of you might have read up there that this female robot statue was supposed to look similar to the one in the shaving commercial from some while ago and was also meant to be smaller than the other robot statue Cyrah, but after deciding not to buy just a torso and make the rest of the parts, I bought a very lightweight headless fiberglass mannequin to make it out of instead since this way I can still use the head I already made, and best of all I wouldn't have to screw around with fiberglass for ages to make the rest of the limbs.

But still, as you can see, this will need some re-planning...
TemplatePhotos-050.jpg

It turns out that the mannequin I bought through an Internet auction is not only a whole lot taller than Cyrah, but generally larger too, so my idea to make it as a small Asian looking robot woman will no longer work. Still I have decided not to simply make her shorter when adding the joints, because then she would just look chubby against Cyrah who is very thin, so I suppose Zenia will be the larger one of the two.

The measurements from the head I made was put through some sort of body size mathematical whateveryouwanttocallit and showed that the apropriate size of the full body would be 170 centimeters, but this time I had to reverse that to figure out the apropriate head size for the new larger body, and it was meant to be an inch taller.
TemplatePhotos-054.jpg

After the head had been extended, it started to look OK, but still it will be extended more horizontally, so the head in the photo looks sort of too thin right now. And for those of you who think there is no chance in hell to find an Asian woman this tall, take a look at this ---> http://www.funatiq.com/interesting-and-funny/tall-asian-beauty/

Thats why i bought a female child mannequin. Good work btw:thumbsup

Re: Female Android - Zenia

I see your point, and yeah I am sort of dissapointed that this will turn out to be something completely different, damn she looks so big and Terminator like that I'm almost afraid to keep her here :p Still in the end I think I will like this a whole lot anyway when it is finished with all the lights and glowing hair.

Carrying a female woman mannequin into your house will make your neighbors think you are a pervert, carrying a female child mannequin into your house will make them think you are a pedophile pervert ;)

Re: Female Android - Zenia

I wonder what my neighbors thought of me when i carryed a broken box with body parts sticking out.. :)

Re: Female Android - Zenia

Hehe, AHH! Murderer!!

Any progress there with your Android and body parts? Haven't seen any of that here yet, but I know what yer up to ;)

Re: Female Android - Zenia

Im doing a pepakura fallout armor so the android have been delayed ,but i have been trying to figure out how i want the interior endoskeloton to look like, Im thinking that she could be cool if she had a modified slimmer version of Terminator hand/arms

Check this out.. Im going to use this to make one in plastic

Re: Female Android - Zenia

Ah yes, one sees. Good luck with both those things then, am looking forward to seeing your Android, sounds cool with an interior endoskelleton like that.

Here I will try to finish at least her face today to see what she really looks like.
