Well, I ws getting my morning coffee at a gas station and on the front page of the paper is ROBOCOP!
Apparently some people are lobbying to get a statue of Robocop in front of the police station or in the area of the station in Detroit.:love

Personally I say do it...some fun positive energy to a city that has been beaten down...plus if it's funded by donations...go for it. heck Rocky has a statue in philly

that would be great! i'd definitely make an effort to pilgrimage to detroit if that were done lol.

It'd be a tourist attraction and would bring new people to the city, isn't that what they want? Or are they to stupid to see that.

The irony of course is that the scenes depicted in the Robocop films are probaly much better than what is actually going on there now.

Exactly. From what i've seen and heard from people living there its like a warzone that makes the movies look tame. It's apparent that the Mayor's last interest is bringing folks into the city. it would be good PR because it would show that the city if filming friendly and maybe get crews in to film stuff.

pst..... Robocop was filmed in Texas.

The website says they've raised 14K and are a quarter of the way to their goal. Does it really cost 40k + to commission and cast a life-sized bronze? It was a cool movie and all that but I didn't think it was profound enough in any way to warrant a city sanctioned monument.

I wouldn't say that at all.
I'm out in the suburbs, but have been downtown plenty of times and my wife works downtown.

Michael Bay has been here enough times (most recently for Transformers 3). Hollywood knows it's "filming friendly".

I have mixed feelings on the statue. Robocop is one of my favorite movies (definitely in my top 10), but it's not exactly monument material.
The movies depict Detroit as a crime-ridden dying city being taken over by a giant corrupt corporation. They're graphically violent and weren't even filmed here.

Robocop isn't the inspirational figure that Rocky is. Several Philly landmarks were featured in Rocky. Detroit certainly didn't get that treatment in Robocop.

While I'd love a Robocop statue downtown, I think the mayor was right in his decision. However, if a private group commissions the statue I'd be fine with it and be right there for the unveiling.

At least the movies provide a link between Robocop and the city of Detroit. In El Monte, California, there's a 30-foot-tall fiberglass replica of the Statue of Liberty in front of City Hall for no apparent reason. :unsure

I echo Chris' sentiments. I'm also from the Detroit area and am kind of luke warm on the idea. Detroit is a very film friendly city. From Beverly Hills Cop to Transformers 3. Heck, I even got to meet Harrison Ford around '88-'89, so it has the potentailnto draw big stars. If Detroit wants to put a bronze Robocop statue up, let them. What do you expect from a city that has a giant bronze fist of Joe Louis?

A Robocop statue anywhere will always, always get my vote.

But I can see why politicians wouldn't want to celebrate Robocop's vision of Detroit as dystopia! :lol
