Robinson Caruso on Mars

Or how finding it on DVD broke my heart.

Well, I had this idea that it would be cool to find Robinson Caruso on Mars on DVD or wait for it to be rebroadcast so I could get screen captures of the main ship or the escape pod to build a studio scale model.

I haven't seen this movie played on TV in forever and happened to be at Borders today looking in their DVD area and what did I find?

There was Robinson Caruso on Mars.

I was thinking it would be $19.99 or less since it was after all made in 1964.

As I pulled the DVD out to check the price I about had a heart attack.

They wanted $39.99 for it.

If it was half that I would have bought it.

Anyway, if anyone happens to have this wonderful film and would like to take some screen captures of the spacecraft and escape pod to post in this thread I would appreciate it.

One of the best films of "Classic SciFi" but under-rated due to title.

The fact that Criterion did it shows someone really cares about film.
They are an excellent company specializing in rare, hard to find, foreign, and Just Superb Films- worth the money (but yeah, shop around!)

It is absolutely worth every penny. I saw this in a theater when I was a kid, and it has to be one of my top five favorite movies ever. it seemed to take forever to be released on DVD. the best I've lived with for years was a DVD bootleg of the Laserdisk release. The new dvd does allow for some really nice shots of the ship(s), and the commentary and extras are fantastic!

And I was thrilled to discover that I've been right for about 30 years... that sausage plant that saved his life in the movie (called "poi sausage" in the film) was... in reality... pepperoni!

This is also in my top 10 movies right up there with Silent Running.
I like both of those movies more than Star Wars or Star Trek because I watched them both long before the huge franchise movies came out.

I will buy Robinson Caruso on Mars someday.
It may have to wait till I am back to work.

In the movie, does he slowly take off his sunglasses, look enigmatically into the camera, before walking silently away.....:lol

...and not be able to act his way out of the wet paper bag he's in?
NYPD Mars.
CSI Mars.
Laffo.

Best movie EVER!
I have the Criterion Laserdisc....and I probably paid $119.00 for it back in the day, but my disc jacket is signed by Paul Mantee and Victor Lundin :)
I should get Adam West to sign it and I'll have the whole cast! Except for Barney the Wooly Monkey who plays Mona.

The movie is loaded with awesome props. Theres a pretty cool book on Ib Melchior who wrote the screenplay. The book is by one of the Skotak brothers, the talented special effects guys from Aliens and a thousand other sci-fi films.

So does anyone who has either the laser disc or the DVD have the ability to take screen captures of the escape pod and spacecraft?

There are no photos of them on the internet anywhere.

Any help would be appreciated.

I used to have the LD as well and I'm pretty sure that all of the extras were rolled over onto the DVD (they were/are both Criterion releases):

* New, restored high-definition digital transfer
* Audio commentary featuring screenwriter Ib Melchior, actors Paul Mantee and Victor Lundin, production designer Al Nozaki, Oscar-winning special effects designer and Robinson Crusoe on Mars historian Robert Skotak, and excerpts from a 1979 audio interview with director Byron Haskin
* Destination: Mars, a new video featurette by Michael Lennick detailing the science behind Robinson Crusoe on Mars
* Excerpts from Melchior’s original screenplay
* New music video for Victor Lundin’s song “Robinson Crusoe on Mars”
* Stills gallery of behind-the-scenes photos, production designs, and promotional material
* Theatrical trailer
* PLUS: A booklet featuring a new essay by filmmaker and space historian Michael Lennick, Melchior’s “Brief Yargorian Dictionary” of original alien dialect, and a list of facts about Mars from his original screenplay

I reeeeaaally wish Criterion had made this title one of their first Blu-Ray releases. It was one of their most requested DVD re-issues and with all the wide-screen/technicolor goodness, as good as the transfer is, Standard-Def doesn't do it justice.

That very well could be... All I was able to get was a bootleg, which probably didn't have everything that was on the original.

That ship was for sale on profiles in history a while back. Should be some good catalog shots out there as well.

Someone posted some screengrabs of this on another model site. If I can remember where I'll post a link to the thread. Sadly, the movie doesn't show the ship very much.
