RIP Captain Phil (Deadliest Catch)

I wonder if there'll be a memorial for him?

I imagine just a private one.

Apparently, Phil briefly came out of the coma when in the hospital and ordered the Discovery camera crew that was present to keep filming everything. Although I personally would not want to witness his final moments, the potential is still there that the family might allow Discovery to air the footage.

I don't get why these guy take this kind of risk for such lousy wages. I only watched season one and when the pay off came, I figured it would be more.

So, the filming for the next season was essentially done when Phil had his stroke. Heard on the radio that when Phil was in the hospital the film crew was being respectful to Phil and his family but was summoned closer to his bed, and was given a note from Phil to 'let the story continue'.

Not sure if it's true, but it seems like something Phil would do.

I wonder how they will handle the upcoming season.

Actually they do make a fair amount per deckhand with a good haul during King Crab and Opelio Crab seasons. So much so that most only need to work during those times. But the job has a HIGH burnout rate and the wages earned can vary between boats and skippers. Plus you can never fully guarantee the ship will have a successful season. Some can wrap up early, others have to slog it out for longer to get the quota.

I don't think it was Phil's smoking that ultimately contributed to his death, although it was a factor. His mom died of blood clots and he survived a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot passed through his lung). As such, a stroke was probably only a matter of time. If anything, the embolism gave him a wakeup call and he was able to spend more time with his kids, knowing he wasn't going to be around as long as he originally thought he was. That man lived more in his short life then many who live almost twice as long.

I just know I'll never look at a King Crab in quite the same way again. I will always think fondly of Phil's Crab "fart bubbles" and not learn to complain too much when the weather gets cold out as it beats working on a Crab boat during Opelio season!

Looks like Jake is having a rough time dealing with his dad's death....

http://blogs.seattleweekly.com/dailyweekly/2010/02/jake_harris_son_of_deadliest_c.php

"Deadliest Catch" deckhand Jake Harris has had a bad week. Last Tuesday he lost his dad, the lovably gruff Captain Phil. And last night he was arrested for investigation of drunk driving and hit-and-run.

Washington State Troopers stopped the 24-year-old's BMW around 9 p.m. last night at the Mercer St. exit on I-5. He was then arrested for investigation of DUI and driving with a suspended license.

The WSP later got a call that a similar car had rear-ended another vehicle near where 520 and I-5 meet hours before Captain Phil's youngest son was arrested. That car, said the caller, then sped off.

A spokesperson for the family told KIRO that Harris was booked last night. But says he wasn't drunk, and didn't hit any other cars.

Interesting development. Being thrust into adulthood without one's father can do some nasty things. I just hope he finds a way to conquer his demons without hurting anyone (maybe his brother Josh can pummel some sense into him).

In other news, Jake Anderson on the Northwestern dealt with the death of one of his sisters last year and his dad Karl disappeared from their home in Washington in January. His truck was found, but so far, no sign of Karl according to the Anacortes, WA news.

I remember last season on After the Catch, Phil and Sig talked about swapping Jakes for a season to give each of them eye opening experience on the different boats. I wonder if they did that or not?

I think it would be good for Jake to move over to the Northwestern. It seemed like Phil and Sig were pretty good friends... and Jake could use a father figure with his dad gone. Like Phil, Sig seems like he's a 'tough but fair' kind of guy.

Pretty sad episode. The docs gave him a great chance of recovery and it turned on a dime. What could have gone so wrong!?!?!

Also pretty sad to see next weeks previews when Sig floats by the docked C.M.

Going to miss you Phil!

I haven't watched the last few shows because I know they'll just rip me apart... the morning radio show was playing some audio clips from last night's episode and I could barely drive because I was crying.

Hearing Josh call Jake and say "We lost dad" just did me in entirely... I would NOT have been able to sleep after watching that episode from being keyed up emotionally. I'll probably watch them on-demand on Saturday afternoon when I have some time to unwind afterward.

I have not seen the last episode yet either. But we have been seeing the Northwestern quite a bit the past few weeks, we even had some of them over on our boat for a tour. they are friends of one of the crew.
