very disappointed, even in 3d, i give it 6 out of 10

lazy screen play and direction / scott is past his best i think.

Just got back from seeing this......I'm going to have to chew on it for a few days me thinks :confused

Looks like I'm going against the flow in loving this movie :unsure

Seems like everyone wanted another remake after all.

The script had its weak points, but I actually kinda dug the fact that everything wasn't explained in a pat way. I didn't think there was anything that was particularly difficult to figure out, other than 'Shaw's big question', which was obviously left open for a sequel.

Ridley's good by me.

I've had a bit of a chew & I liked it!

Ultimately I completely agree with Birdie's synopsis, though I have a bit more to add.
I dont think I'll discuss it in any more detail untill after the 8th though :)

Saw it yesterday. My two pals were somewhat entertained, but I was fairly disappointed. For the most part I feel he put too much emphasis on effects rather than story and characters. Couldn't really care less about any of them. I had a lot of flashbacks to AvP1.

I agree, so much was missing, there just seems to be a lack of quality with characters or believability in movie's these days. The more I think about the film the more it becomes just a good movie.

So many out of this world things that happen that just go by without people batting an eye lid. I'm surprised that Doug McClure and a diving bell weren't in the last sequence, it would have made more sense to me :facepalm

I thought David, Vickers and Janek were all pretty well developed, and the dialogue between the crew with the bickering and smart remarks was sharp and familiar from the Alien Universe.

Shaw and Holloway were kind of ciphers for the typical 'idealistic scientist' characters, and the actors weren't given enough to do or define themselves within the script. Noomi Rapace is no Sigourney, but I kinda liked Holloway's wide-eyed enthusiasm.

Too many crew members with no defining characteristics lead to the usual lack of identification for the audience, but I thought Idris Elba's world weary Captain Janek was terrific and very likeable. I also though Vickers had some interesting underlying stuff going on beyond the badass beotch act.

The criticisms that the crew acted really dumb is, I think, completeley justified. They acted like B movie horror characters, Scott and Lindeloff really should have been smarter. When you get into the territory of 'the flame-thrower shouldn't have worked in that atmosphere', I really can't be doing with that kind of nit-picking. The movie had some problems, for sure, but it was leagues above the kind of drek that frquently seems to get a pass here.

Lindeloff and Scott were clearly more interested in David than any of the human characters, and I thought there was some pretty interesting underlying stuff going on with him and his motivations that could throw up some interesting discussion.

Maybe when a few more people have seen the movie who liked it as much as I did, and are willing to look past the weaknesses in the script to the good stuff (of which there was a lot, imho).

Or maybe not. Tough crowd.

I thought it would have been more interesting if David had been the sole survivor and he'd made the decision himself to infect the crew and eventually kill off everybody, even going against his mission to save his "father" and then go off to visit the homeworld of the space jockey's on his own. There was just basically just no need for Shaw to survive and be the one deciding on that journey.

I never got her "faith" issue. I just kept assuming she wore and wanted the cross because it'd been her father's, not because she believed in God or heaven or any of that.

Actually, that was pretty much my interpretation of what David WAS doing in the movie. His contamination of Holloway seemed to be to satisfy his own curiosity, and potentially to eliminate the crew, along with Wayland.

The dialogue between David and Shaw about freedom, ending with his line 'Don't we all want to see our parent's die?' seemed to heavily indicate that he was manipulating everyone, and potentially infect the earth by placing Shaw in stasis with the creature in her.

We also don't know what David said to the engineer, to send it on a rampage. Pretty much everything we know about the engineers came from him. Were they even going to destroy/infect Earth as he claimed?

I was actually fascinated by the mysteries set up in the movie, and don't require 'solid' answers, as I felt there were plenty of clues thoughout to make your own interpretations, which is maybe why I enjoyed the movie so much more than everyone else seemed to.

Yes... I got that he was manipulating everybody... but the other characters' total lack of acknowledging anything about well... anything... just killed that whole plot point for me.

While I agree it was poorly conveyed, the crew of The Prometheus, were, like the Marines in Aliens, unaware of their mission until they arrived.

The true intent was basically a 'vanity project' on behalf of Weyland. The advance team were a scientific crew, unlikeley to have weapons training, and Vickers didn't want them to find anything that could potentially help her father, which could explain her not insisting on sending a security team with them.

The lack of hard exploration protocols may also be layed at Weyland's door, who wanted his extended life at any cost.

The whole Milburn/Fifield subplot was inexcusably dumb though, what with them having the whole area they had traversed mapped and accessible through their suits and Janek, and their reaction towards the serpent was bizaree in tone and motivation.

The helmet removals was equally stupid, no doubt dictated by Scott wanting to avoid confusion as to who was who.

The movie felt slashed to me, as if the character reactions and responses to various events were cut for pacing. Will be interesting to see if there was excised material on the dvd

Anyone know if there's going to be any official merchandise? Willie?

Yup, there's some at Foxshop now:

http://www.foxshop.com/prometheus/index.php?v=fox_movies_prometheus

A series of licensed t-shirts in the UK. Hot Toys is doing large figures, and I believe NECA is doing smaller ones.

There's also some books, some I can talk about:
