Ridley Scott Prometheus: NOT the Alien Prequel Details

Yeah, the music inspired by Zack Hemsey's Mind Heist in the trailer would have seriously brought the movie to another level. It just... well... even lacked the weirdness and strong emotional emphasis of Jerry Goldsmith's score... which is a shame.

Man theres so many movies these days that I love but alot of people don't. Am I losing it or am I just going to the movies still with my inner child and other people have grown into cynical old critics that analyze every minute little detail and flaw instead of just enjoying the movie.:)

I thought it was okay, this movie was more like a mystery and it kind of lacked that suspense that Umph! in Alien with every turn of a corner and David the robot or android really ticked me off in this movie he basically was running around doing what ever he wanted but in reality he was following orders, that's all I'm saying Lol.

I can't help feeling that Scott was gearing us up in interviews for a lot more intense an experience than I felt was delivered, certainly the initial trailer with it's perfect editing and scoring suggested the dark place hinted at in Alien was finally being explored.
The final movie score did an awful lot in my opinion to drain whatever suspense, menace or intrigue out of the visuals. In particular I had the most quizical furrowed brow during David's star map scene - I couldn't believe something so visually interesting was being assisted by such a bland and generic score. It reminded me of the incessant orchestral muzak that dominated much of new Star Trek on TV. Such a missed opportunity, imo.

Not as good as I thought it would be, many points to touch on but will wait till later or tomorrow to share until more people see it, but want to say the music that we hear in all the trailers that suspenseful sound you know the one, not even heard in the movie why do they do that?
Most trailers are put together before the score is available. It can be taken from other sources or put together quickly just for the trailer. I remember the previews for Remo Williams had music from Raiders, that was the first time I noticed it.

I'm sorry but the musical score sounded more like something for a whimsical love story with fairies and unicorns Lol.

Basically, all films should simply actually go to release using the score from Requiem for a Dream. Then we wouldn't have this problem.

:lol

It does get kind of irritating when a film's trailer has such an awesome song tied to it and it's nowhere in the film. Reminds me of the one in the first Inception trailer. From what I read, there is a studio that actually composes these songs and they're engineered to sound cool, be catchy, etc. and they are strictly for trailers and not available to purchase. Can anyone confirm this?

Granted, I don't know if that was the case with Prometheus but it's something to keep in mind next time you hear a really great tune in a trailer.

Good point about the trailer music. Whenever I get the film stuck in my head (I'm only a few hours away from seeing it now), I have that "thrum" sound from the trailer in my head.

The Inception trailer had the Mind Heist number that clearly inspired the Prometheus trailer music and can be bought here: Mind Heist | Zack Hemsey

Just wish he'd offer cd's too instead of just downloads.

How close was your working relationship with Ridley Scott?

"Incredibly close. Coming from primarily a television background I look at writing as a collaborative process, the story to the set pieces and the dialogue. When I first came in and talked to Ridley about John [Spaihts]‘s script and what my recommendations were, how to evolve it and move it forward and find that balance between what was clearly at the time an Alien prequel but really wanted to be an original movie that had two children – one of those children would grew up to be Alien but the other child, that I was more interested in, was going to be a wild card – people want to go and see movies which end in unpredictable ways. So I said ‘Let’s take these grand themes of Who Am I? and Who Made Me? and Why hath thou forsaken me?’ which were embedded in this draft and bring those themes up and push all the Alien stuff, like the facehugging, chestbursting and the acid for blood stuff down. We’ve seen that before, we love it but we’ve seen enough movie about that. So Ridley hired me and then what ensued was we would have over three or four weeks, four days a week, sometimes five or six hour story sessions, and I would write every word that was coming out of his mouth and would ask him questions. We spent a whole day talking about 2001 and Stanley Kubrick. I felt like I understood the movie Ridley wanted to make so I did my draft and we repeated the process all over again. I know, and John agrees, that we were monkeys sitting at typewriters, but we were just channeling Ridley’s vision of the movie."

I don't think Lindelof's out to make any friends in Hollywood with these statements, saying he was just channeling Ridley thoughts. I would point out it was his proposal to take "Prometheus" in such a different direction that resulted in him getting the gig in the first place and the radical change to the original "more direct prequel" was entirely his idea. Ridley hired him in the belief he could deliver a script that fullfilled those promises. He failed to do so and flawed the movie seriously.
And it still doesn't change the fact the dialogue and characterization that was written was so uneven and down right poor in places. If you haven't the balls to take the penalty you should never have volunteered in the first place. To quote the Joker he is coming across as a right little squealer.
Even his explanations here come across as vague and phantom like. If he didn't like what he was hearing from Ridley he should have said. Thats his job. To tell a story that makes sense to his audience. I am really starting to dislike the guy.

I noticed the lated TV spot says "before there was ALIEN, there was PROMETHEUS". I think the studio is having second thoughts about this being separate from Alien, and are now trying to tie it directly to Alien.

Just a little more info to show just how Lindelof changed the direction of "Prometheus".Tah Wikipedia.

"However, Scott instead contacted Lindelof and requested that he review Spaihts' script.[74] Within the hour, a messenger delivered the script to Lindelof and informed the writer that he would be waiting outside to take it back as soon as Lindelof had finished reading it.[75] Unaware of what the producers liked about the existing script, Lindelof informed Scott and the producers that he found the general concept appealing, but that the story relied too heavily on elements of the Alien films, such as the general concept of the Alien creatures life-cycle. As a direct prequel to Alien, it was focused on leading into that film's story, and recreating the familiar cues of that series,[74] and Scott was adamant that he avoid repeating previous accomplishments.[76] Lindelof clarified, "If the ending to [Prometheus] is just going to be the room that John Hurt walks into that's full of [alien] eggs [in Alien], there's nothing interesting in that, because we know where it's going to end. Good stories, you don't know where they're going to end."[76] "A true prequel should essentially proceed [sic] the events of the original film, but be about something entirely different, feature different characters, have an entirely different theme, although it takes place in that same world."[68]

Writer Damon Lindelof promoting Prometheus at WonderCon in 2012. Lindelof was hired to rewrite Jon Spaihts's original script.Lindelof suggested that the other parts of the script were strong enough to survive without the Alien hallmarks, such as the Alien creature which he believed had been "diluted" by the exposure it had received since, and the burden of "all the tropes of that franchise with Facehuggers and Chestbursters".[68][77] He offered that the film could instead run parallel to those films, such that a sequel would be Prometheus 2 and not Alien, and submitted an idea for how such a sequel could work. He met with the producers the following morning, and was hired shortly afterwards in late 2010.[77][39] Under Lindelof, the script began to divert from Spaihts' Alien prequel into a more original creation.[39] Scott and Lindelof worked together five days a week between July and August 2010, trying to piece together exactly what vision Scott was trying to convey and how the script needed to change, including scaling back the Alien symbology and tropes. Beginning in August, Lindelof spent four to five weeks writing his first draft before submitting it mid-September 2010.[62] Inspired by Blade Runner and Spaihts' script, Lindelof thought that it would be possible to combine an Alien story of action and horror with "the Blade Runner thematic",[74] to ask bigger questions that he felt were normally posed in science fiction films. Lindelof explained:

Blade Runner might not have done well [financially] when it first came out, but people are still talking about it because it was infused with all these big ideas. [Scott] was also talking about very big themes in Prometheus. It was being driven by people who wanted the answers to huge questions. But I thought that we could do that without ever getting too pretentious. Nobody wants to see a movie where people are floating in space talking about the meaning of life ... That was already present in [Spaihts'] original script and [Scott] just wanted to bring it up more.[74]

The only big question Bladerunner ever raised for me was "Was he a replicant or not." Is Lindelof trying to shift the blame for the Prometheus script now because the original writer for BR has got the job and not him? I am forced to wonder what the film could have been like had he not been brought on board. Does anyone have access to the original script before it was turned into "Lost in Space" hah hah!

The thing is, these "big ideas" Scott and Lindelof keep banging on about just aren't that interesting imo compared to the more mature and nuanced questions both Alien and Bladerunner left us with. 'Who made us?' and 'where do we come from' are just so well-worn and broad a concept that to me they only seem profound to someone just entering adolescence and is only just beginning to ask questions outside themselves.
Why is he recycling ideas that were rightfully dumped at the conception stage of Alien?

Cutthumb - if you want a depressing (sorry) read: 'Prometheus' Concept Artist Explains How the Movie Fixes 'Alien' | Hollywood.com

lol! Like Alien needs fixing!

and a quote:

According to Messing, even the original film's iconic imagery could be improved through Prometheus' modern technology and afforded design time. "He was never that much in love with the facehugger. He thought it was goofy and never really liked it." A set in Prometheus, the epically scaled "pilot chamber" seen in the trailers, takes its cues from a location in Alien where a mysterious creature (dubbed the Space Jockey) was found sitting in a humongous chair. "There's the flooring… I spent a lot of time redesigning that whole set. He hated it because they basically took a bunch of plumbing and pipes that they found and laid it out on the ground. He walked in there and that's what he saw and he couldn't change it."

It really is depressing to read that Scott sees those elements as requiring a fix! I'm coming round more and more to the view that much of what I once may have ascribed to a master at work, was perhaps a fluke.

I honestly enjoyed Prometheus for what it was: a bit of lightweight sci-fi entertainment, on a par with Avatar (though even Avatar had a more robust and well honed script/structure) - but if there is to be any connection at all to Alien, it's the juvenile younger sibling embarrassing itself by reading it's 'profound' adolescent poetry aloud.

Yup... sounds like the writer can't take responsibility for the crap he dumped on the original script.

Even with keeping things within the ALIEN world, there could still have been sequels. It didn't have to end with the derelict we know and the space jockey in the chair from ALIEN. Seeing as there are more derelict ships buried in the silos... what happens to them and why doesn't Weyland company go to THAT moon... so clearly something happens to destroy derelicts and everything else there, which we didn't see in this movie, so they can't go there to strip-mine the place, but plants secret mission protocols on company ships going through various systems searching other moons and planets for potential leftovers. Too much is missing.

And yes, I would love to read that original script treatment to see what the original ideas and directions were and what that hack writer forced in there.

Yeah, there was never any indication in any of the documentaries or commentaries that Ridley Scott wasn't overly pleased with what was made for ALIEN. Never one complaint. Only praise.

sex question
if elizabeth was infertile, and the squid-kraken came from a mutated sperm, shouldn't 500 billion squid-krakens have come out of her?
