I don't know why I got interested in the ration or "portion" from The Force Awakens...but I did! I finally satisfied my interest by making them.

I made a mold of the "veg-meat" so that I could repeat the pieces until I got the right look AND so I could make more than one set. I ran a few and I honestly think the slightly transparent version looks more correct.

The bread material is just flour and some spices I had. I think it needs to have a little more dark pieces. I'll have to play around with that a little more.

The stamp on the bag is just a stamp I made. I only have one grainy photo to go from. I THINK it says "ration". That's what I went with any way. (And yes the photo is backwards)

The bag is 2 layers of 4 mil poly. One is clear and the other translucent. I couldn't completely tell if both were clear or not. I think at least one side is and the other not.

That's that. So if I ever decide to make a Rey costume I'll have to pack a few of these in her bag. ;-)

Ha! That´s awesome. Looks great man. In the movie it looks like it was vacuum sealed. Now make the bread like stuff that rises. It was a practical effect after all. :)

Have you thought of a possible edible version? I'd also love to see the automatic rising bread. Keep up the great work!

Love this!! Looks great :D I was thinking about making one of these eventually for my Rey costume, I may take a note out of your book and use flour/spices for the "bread."

Thanks all!

The only reference I found (so far) was one small image in the Visual Guide book. I used it for figuring out the size/shape/scale of the 3 pieces.

For the overall size there is one frame in the movie where Rey slides the bag across the table. I "guessed" her hand and mine where roughly the same size. That gave me a starting point of the finished size of the bag.

Based on that I could back into the image from the book to size everything else.

I also discovered that the bag doesn't seal all the way across in some areas. I don't know if that makes sense. What that meant is that i couldn't just seal the edges of the bag in my machine. I needed to mess around with positioning the material and covering some of it with layers of teflon tape to match the image.

Again, I'm guessing in some ways due to almost no good reference. Once the BluRay comes out I can pause on those frames and get a better look. Until then this works. :)

I'll get some more photos for others making these.

HA! Yeah flour and spices! Surprisingly though I spent a lot of time trying to get the spices to look right...still not perfect.

We are a strange bunch aren't we!?! :D

I bought the Force Awakens Visual Guide. There is one small image of the bag on page 39.

Thanks. It was a very cool practical effect, too!

A co-worker told me I should do that. I suppose the 3 pieces could be made like a candy. Sugar candy. Powered sugar for the "flour" with bits of...I don't know what. Get a nice sugar fix! :)

This was one of my favorite details in the movie. Awesome to see it done so well!

Cool. Bizarrely, this was one of the props that jumped out at me as needing to be made (along with the fighting ball robots!)
