While searching for news of classic horror and sci-fi new to dvd, I came across the following article. Hopefully this is good news for an inevitable dvd/blu-ray release.

When Turner Classic Movies (TCM) launches the first-ever TCM Classic Film Festival in April 2010 in Hollywood, the spectacular events will include the North American premiere of a restored version of Fritz Lang’s 1927 science-fiction silent masterpiece Metropolis.

TCM’s screening of Metropolis will mark the first presentation of the new restoration of the film in North America. Due to the sensational 2008 discovery of a 16mm negative in Buenos Aires and its current restoration, Metropolis can now be shown with 30 minutes of additional footage that has been unseen since the 1927 Berlin premiere.

This nearly complete copy of Lang’s 204-minute original now stands as the authoritative version of the film, according to the Murnau Foundation, which holds the copyrights on all of Lang’s films. The newly reconstructed Metropolis features extensive scenes that flesh out many of the supporting characters, fill in previously jarring gaps in the plot and provide additional back story.

The music score for Metropolis will be provided live by the Alloy Orchestra, a three-man musical ensemble that will be celebrating its 20th year of writing and performing live accompaniment to classic silent films.

Found in my country thanks to film historian Salvador Samaritano (RIP)
I really thought it was complete. They screened it in Buenos Aires last year I think.

Pity Forry Ackerman didn't live to see this.

Thanks for the heads up.

Saw the Kino rerelease in 2002 (?) - DYING to see the restored version. More Thin Man stuff, right?

The mediator between the head and hands MUST be the heart!!

Great news. Saw the movie recently for a review... loved it, but had to imagine what happened in the black scenes with text, where stuff was missing. Will be cool to see how they really look.

When's the Blu-ray release :unsure
It was supposed to be 2009, now if there's not even a screening till April 2010 how long till the BR release ?

Re: Restored Metropolis - L.A. Screening April 2010

Yeah, I'm counting the days until a Blu-Ray release too but I very much doubt we'll see anything before 4th quarter of 2010 at the very earliest (hope I'm wrong though).

Cheers

Makes me wonder about any original music (if any) that was
envisioned or produced at the time (1927 1928 1930) of the original showings.

The original music from the 27 premiere, composed for the film, was recorded for the most recent KINO DVD release. It's remarkable.

Further information on the Berlin premiere this Friday:

Planned to go, but only make it to Berlin on Saturday and leave already on Sunday. But you never know who you are going to run in there ;)

I hope they finally have restored the scene at the end of the credits where Maria is informed about the Avenger Initiative.
