Resin Preferences?

I've been using several products from Smooth-On's line for quite some time and been very happy, but someone recently asked me about Alumilite's black resin. So I'd like to know everyone's opinion on the stuff. I've never had a bad experience with Smooth On, not been too happy with Synair's pour-a-cast or pour-a-mold in the past.

Is Alumilite as easy too work with as the Smooth-Cast line?

How is it on durability and longevity? Is it brittle?

What about weight?

Thanks,
Eric

Man, i have always used smooth-on products and used alumilite too, and as for ease of use and cost and the no bubbles and such of the smooth-on stuff i would stay with them.

Alumilite resins are great but they are different then Smooth On resins...

The Alumilite black is nice because it's damn black (and consistant) right out of the container...

The two biggest factors I find with Alumilite resin though is that it's real thick compaired to Smooth On, think maple syrup, and it kicks and hardens faster... It gets to the rigid full cure state much faster then Smooth On that seems to get caught up in that hard rubber stage for an hour or so... And because of this if you need to do a lot of shaping to the part you will expose more trapped internal air bubbles... Do, note these bubbles are not present on the surface so if you get a clean cast you are good...

All in all I really like Alumilite for big molds where you don't have to worry about getting in tight spaces or when I need a quick casting...

I say give it a try, but don't waste time get it stirred and in the mold ;) You might want to drop it in the fridge for awhile to slow it down more in line with Smooth On

I´ve tried quite a few different brands of silicone and resins and found the smooth on product line as one of the most comfortable to work with. I use the semi-transparent resins (rencast afaik), which have to be colored with pigments/ liquids, but I can easily archieve a true black.

Want to change the stuff you´ll use for our RC helmets ;) ?.

Na, I think I'll stick with SC-ROTO for that. I can tint them a gray to semi dark gray for those wanting to paint the helmets black.

A friend was asking about it for making the DC-17 RC blasters, I don't have time to get to those so he was going to tackle it. He was who made them for us for D*C.

But thanks guys, I'll pass on the info so far.
