Replicating the MR BD Maul finish

I have a Zenkai Maul with greeblies and so forth, and I've sanded out/polished any machine marks and prepped it to paint the black sections. But one thing I adore about the MR version is the darkened finish. I've used alumablack before, but I'm just not confident it'll give me an even look. Any thoughts on how to achieve this?

I've found in the past when going for a battle damaged look on sabers or blasters that a few light, quick misting coats with a flat black spray paint, and the same light misting with the following Tamiya Color paints produce a similar effect:
TS-40 Metallic Black
TS-38 Gun Metal
TS-42 Light Gun Metal

This was a resin saber that I later sold to a gentleman in Canada. I achieved the weathered look by using the misting technique with the Tamiya rattle cans. Jsut a few quick, light sprays. Nothing fancy or overcooked. I think it turned out ok.:)

There should be no problem using those paints on aluminium. I've found they are pretty durable on a lot of the aluminium sabers I've done. I'd start off with a very light misting of flat black and then go from the darkest to lightest colour, slowly building it up. You only need to do quick bursts of paint to get the look. I forgot to mention that I also used Tamiya weathering sets to put the finishing touches on, such as the scorched metal effect at the sliced section and the silver showing through on the red buttons.

This things are a really simple yet effective way of weathring. You get fantastic results with very little effort thanks to these. I highly recommend getting these sets!:thumbsup
