Reilly's Rangers Combat Amor Build

AAAAAAAAANNND I'M BACK FOLKS!!! With..... An update!

Wow folks, I'm sorry about leaving the thread untended for so long. Ive been busy and honestly I sort of forgot about it. But anyway, Ive got the rest of the work in progress pictures for you as well as the finished product along with some photos of Angie and I at C2E2.

Anyway down to business. Below you will see the final armor pieces constructed; the shoulders. These were particularly hard to make because all I had to cut them with was a box knife and my mothers hair dryer doesn't shape the foam like a real heat gun does. After several trial and errors, more spelt tea, and a frustrated gurgle here and there I finally got something that I was satisfied with.

Now that I have constructed all of the armor pieces my next objective was the paint. first off I started with a coat of silver, then a coat of purple (the color Angie chose. Not screen accurate but what she wanted). While the paint was still a little wet I rubbed some of the purple away to allow the silver to show through. This way the worn effect looks a little more realistic that painting silver over the purple. Anyway, even though this process looked good, it didn't make the armor look weathered enough, so I ended up painting over with silver anyways. I used a cotton swab to dab the silver on and brush it on in areas where the purple would have logically rubbed away. It worked to my satisfaction but next time I think I will try a Woolite pad or something similar. Any suggestions?

After the initial paint I added the Star on the back plate and hand brushed the 'A' on the chest for Angie. Then I airbrushed some brown, and black onto the armor to give it the grimy look and walla!
Next I had to figure out the belt, pouches and the rest of the 'soft parts'. I went to my local surplus store and picked up some carbine pouches and a first aid pouch that looked accurate enough for the belt. To be screen accurate five pouches are needed. however Angie is little and I cant fit five pouches around her wait so three will have to do.

Now, finding a screen accurate belt was kind of hard. If you look closely you see the snap buckle on the two belts. So I went and picked up a couple belts with the flat silver buckles on them for a couple bucks each. They aren't entirely screen accurate but the look good and serve their purpose. After that I got some elastic straps together' painted them black' and airbrushed them with some brown, added Velcro all over the place and boda bing! boda boom! armor suspension!!

The only issues I had were the thigh plates, and cod plate. I had to punch some holes in the armor and use black shoelaces to tie them to the belt. I think it turned out pretty well in the end.
After that I secured the pouches to the belt and assembled the entire armor suspension into one piece (minus cod, and thighs which had to be attached last when wearing armor). The whole set was comfortable and moved easily. It even folds together to be nice and compact for easy transport!!!

Finally I had to add some head ware to compensate for the helmet being to heavy for Angie. One of my favorite pieces from the game is the pre-war hat. I like the style, and look of the hat mostly because I love old things and I love vintage clothing. combine that with my old fashioned views, love of history, and obsession with reenacting one could say that I was born in the wrong decade. Anyway, this worked out extra well because I have a fedora that I wear on a regular basis to serve as the pre-war hat!

At this point the costume is finished. I could not find a jumpsuit anywhere cheap enough to purchase for the costume so I went and bought Angie a grey t shirt, and a pair of grey trousers. She already had a suitable pair of boots, and once we got it all together she was done!!! Below are the finished product as well as some photos of us when we went to the convention!

The guys in these two pictures are fellow RPF members that I ran into at the convention! Awesome right? Both had great costumes and the vault dweller was one of the only three Fallout costumes there!!! He even payed Angie and I seven bottle caps to take a picture of him and his buddy! I didn't catch there names but if either of you two see this give me a shout out!!!

I have begun work on Combat Armor Version 2!!! This version will fit ME and actually be the correct Reilly's Rangers Colors. Stay Tuned!!!!!!!!!

Ive got a tiny update for everybody!

I have re-sized all of the files to ensure that they fit me and am now in the phase of pepping and fitting to see if I have to rescale anything else. Its going good so far, but I have been so bogged down with college lately that I haven't made much progress on them. In addition to that Much of my remaining free time has been spent working on my T51B Power Armor Build. As stated before the first set of armor was a prototype for my Girlfriend. This set will be as high quality as I can make it and as screen accurate as I can make it. It wont be perfect yet, but It will serve as a stepping stone.

Anyway, here are the pepped toe caps and the butt plate!

I was briefly considering making the cod piece out of foam again, but decided to go all the way and pep-res-bondo it for better realism.
Here is the foam cod that I didn't finish. I am going to try getting into the habit of posting prototypes, experiments, bad decisions, and downright failures from now on.

By the way... can anyone tell me how I can make my pictures appear larger for everyone, and also tell me how to upload data files to the thread? I wish to start posting the PDO files to share with everybody and also honor their original creators.

That's all for now great America. This is President John Henry Eden signing off.

This looks great. I am about embark on some of the comabt armour myself to go with the Plasma Rifle I have almost completed.

As I've never worked with foam before I was going to cheat a bit and use various pieces of Moto X or Mountain Bike armour as "mules" for the armour and dress them in foam to get the look right.

After a few hours trawling the net I was amazed that some of the bike armour items are an almost exact match for the RR pieces (close enough for me!) & I already have the PASGT Helmet (actual helmet).

Pro's with this method - fitting/wearing should be easy.
Con's - cost.

Little update for everyone. I have decided that I want to try casting this armor and making multiple sets once it is completed. Therefore, this build will be my top priority for the time being. I need it ready for C2E2 in April. Stay Tuned!

Setback update.... Ive been busy with school lately, but I'll be done in a few weeks. I have no hope of finishing this before C2E2 in two weeks as I had originally wanted, so I'll be donning my NCR Trooper kit instead. This kit will be my next top priority after I finish school. I need to make a few casts after I finish it for a fan film I'm going to be working on in June, so I have some work cut out ahead of me. I have come to realize though, that it isn't the work necessarily that causes these projects to take so long... It's life getting in the way. Ive made some progress so stay tuned!
