Re: Reference shots and info for Underworld Selene costume needed!
I can't believe I didn't see this thread earlier!! Selene is one of my all time favourite characters, and I've coveted this costume ever since I first saw the original movie oh so many years ago! I know this costume pretty well with all the research I've done into it
Hopefully I can help!
I had intended to make this costume for a con earlier this year, but for various reasons it got put on hold. I finally got back to it last week, and wore it last weekend to a street party. Unfortunately I only got the corset finished (still gotta make the bracers and holsters). I'm not all that happy with how it ended up turning out, but this was more of a test made of pleather. I do intend to go back and make a good version out of leather.
Firstly, you should choose which Selene you want to do. There are slight difference between Selene from Underworld and Selene from Evolutions. Most notably, there is a seam down the front panel of the corset in Evolutions, and she has two holsters which attach via magnets, whereas in the first one she has one leg holster which straps on.
The Selene costume consists of:
- Black latex like catsuit (or vinyl or pvc, depending on what you can get). This shouldn't be too shiny, hers is actually quite matt. Zips up the front and has two leather straps on the neck with clips (similar to the ones on her corset).
- Black leather corset (or pleather if you like). If you're planning on making it, I can tell you how many panels and where all the boning goes
Basically she has boning on either side of each seam, plus boning down the centre of each panel. It's laced at the back with 2 zips either side of the lacing. There are 8 straps on total on the corset - three on either side with the bottom one being around the waistline. These are attached at the second panel (fromt he front) of the corset, and finish at the zip. The other two are on the bottom of the right side, and attach in at the seam of the front panel. IT has a machine embroidered design on the front with free stitching filling all the caps (yes, it is stitching not carved). Most probably done with an embroidery machine, but I did mine with a normal sewing machine.
- Black leather bracers. They're basically made from four pieces, with boning on each seam (like the corset) and a zip on the underside.
- Holsters. These will depend on which version you do. If you live in the US, there is a company that makes an airsoft replica complete with holsters (ala Evolutions), but I'm sorry I can't remember who it was (unfortunately Aussie gun laws won't allow airsoft into the country).
- Pistols. I kow they're based off a particular gun, but again I can't remember. She has two different sets of pistols depending on the scene. In the train shootout at the beginning of the first movie she has plain black pistols. For the rest of the movies her guns are black and silver. She also uses a shotgun (I think) in Evolutions. Plus the other vast array of awesome weaponry!
- Boots. She wears lace up black boots (With pretty big heels!), which zip at the side. They have 5 leather straps with silver buckles. Also in Evolutions there's a pouch for her knife.
-Black leather jacket. There are a couple of different versions with differing amounts of embroidery. But it's a leather duster.
That's about it, except for the hair, fangs and contacts! Hopefully that's helpful too you! Hahaha I'm pretty obsessive about this costume, so if you need any help, please ask!
There is a set that you can buy on Ebay, but it depends on how accurate you want to be. HAving seen it in person, it's not bad quality, but it is inaccurate. The design on the front is cut out of pvc and stitched onto the front, and number and positions of the straps and clips on the corset is completely off. It doens't have zips, and the boning is off. But to most people, it's recognisable as Selene (Heheh sorry - I'm a perfectionist!).
I don't have photos of my costume yet, but I'm hoping to get them soon, and I'll post them up. Hoping to finish it and get the contacts for a couple of Halloween events I've got in Oct.
