Red Skull mask - New year, new build

Your sculpt looks like it's coming along nicely....as far as casting the piece, Ecoflex from Smooth-On is what most mask makers use for their full head pieces. Be sure to cut some cloth or some type of fabric and lay it over the eyes, mouth, nose and ears before you pour your silicone in order to reinforce those areas--they like to tear from repeatedly taking the mask on and off.

And don't hesitate to call the tech support guys at Smooth-On if you have questions--they're extremely helpful and friendly.

Good luck and can't wait to see your final product.

Can you do a plaster mold and use silicone instead of having to make a fiberglass, or urethane mold?

Hm. But could it be done though? I bought 50 pounds of plaster and I want to use it. :D

I don't think it would work honestly. I think it would be better for making a positive from a mold than making a mold itself. I don't know how you would do that actually.

Damn. I was thinking of doing what youre doing, and getting the shell shock and plasti-paste from Smooth on, using my sculpt, coating it in the stuff, seperating it, then using my life cast as the core. I was just trying to avoid spending more money. Think that would work?

Well it's worth a try anyway. But I'm trying it without the core. Trying a kind of slush cast it a way. It may not work. But either way my sculpt would not have worked with a core because I didn't build up the clay enough. So all I'm really risking is a bit of money. Just went with the trial size of the silicone. So not too much money. And I can find something else to do with the rest of the shell shock.

The Shell shock comes in two parts, the shell shock itself, and the plasti paste, I was just curious if you were finding a cheaper substitute for the plasti paste, and just getting the shell shock. Im just seeing if there is an alternative just cause Im in the hole already haha.

I hadn't heard of using plasti-paste at all. Looking at it, it doesn't seem totally required. I was planning on just using multiple layers of the shell shock. Where did you learn about using plasti-paste? Can you point me to a link that talks about using shell shock and plasti-paste together?

Yeah sure thing. This is what I found on the smooth on website, Im not sure if its necessary, but this is what I was thinking of doing with my silicone red skull mask. I dont have a degassing chamber, and Im not too sure on the injection method, so I was just going to do this. Not sure of how much material I needed though, thats the bummer.

Thank you. I see what they are doing here. I think the Plasti-Paste makes it quicker and easier to create a sturdy mold. The Shell Shock gets all the detail and the Plasti-Paste give it the strength. I may go ahead and pick up the trial size.

My pleasure. Exactly. I was thinking that too, but didnt want to have to shell out MORE money if the trial size isnt enough. I suppose the trial size of the shell shock would be good, and maybe a larger size of the plasti paste. Im not familiar with resin, thats why I asked if you found a more cost effective alternative to the plasti paste. Shipping for me is expensive. Im thinking a gallon if silicone in case I screw up, and thats already 200 bucks.

Good luck, hope you find something. You think in a big city like San Diego they would have a distributor out here, but of course they dont. No problem. Keep up the great work, excited for your progress.

We have one in SF. Just nto sure if they have it in stock. But I like going there anyway so it's worth going to check.

It seems like it's essentially used for the mother mold. So I might be able to use plaster bandages if I need to. Or maybe just use tons of layers of Shell Shock like I had been planning on. Maybe I'll do an experiment doing that on something small just to see how it holds up.

Lucky. I have been eating shipping costs like no other one everything. Sounds good, excited for the results.
