Recoloring leather - how to?

Hey gang,

I recently (like in the last 5 minutes) finally won the correct model of clock for "The Lost Room" (and I'd like to thank a member here for trying to snipe me in the last 7 seconds ;) :lol ).

Anyway, while it's the correct model, it's the wrong color (I figured it was the lesser of 2 evils). It's an ass-ugly shade of green instead of baby-poop brown. So does anyone have any idea on how to change the color? Would I try to bleach out the old color then apply a new one with dye or paint? Or can I just paint over the old color?

Any help from experienced leather artisans would be greatly appreciated..

I've had a lot of success on leather with Tandy leather dye. Super easy to just brush on over the old color, then you seal it with a spray.

That actually helps immensely :thumbsup

So I don't have to do anything to the old color? Should I clean the surface with something or anything in particular?

Thanks again,
Fred

Fred,

I recommend going over the old finish with deglazer first. You can get degalzer from leather supply shops. This will remove any top-coat finishes, and will also take off some of the color. If you do several applications it may take off quite a bit of the original color.

You can add the new color at that point but test an inconspicuous area first to see how the two colors blend. Be sure to condition the leather when you're done as the deglazing will remove a lot of the oils out of the leather and make it more likely to dry out and/or crack.

Thanks, Al. I have plenty of pecards thanks to my Indy collection :lol

Thanks for the info, Marc. I'll see if Tandy carries the deglazer stuff as well.

All of a sudden, this $10 clock is going to cost me $50.

[sigh] The stupid things we do for props.... :lol
