"Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle - Update 5.2.15

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle! Update 2/21/12 (pg 9)

Looks so cool man!!! As a kid, I wasn't a hardcore fan of TMNT, but after seeing this I may as well have been my whole life!! Can't wait to see the final piece!

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle! Update 2/21/12 (pg 9)

After months on the shelf, I've finally gotten back to work on this guy! Did an hour or so last night and I'll be sculpting again today. I'll take some pics after today's session! Thanks for the continued interest in this piece.

He's getting close!!!

Here's a bit of my progress as of yesterday:

I finally got to give some real attention to the back of his head and the area around his mouth. They were very sketchy to this point. I've got some more texture to add, and then a pass of making sure that nothing looks artifical - no tool marks. Hoping to get back to him for a bit this afternoon.

I haven't tried a mockup of the finished turtle since my initial post, so here's a quick photoshop of him with a mask and some splashes of color:

I'm not even a massive turtles fan but I absolutely love this! It's such a cool and interesting take on the look and incredibly impressive work. Really really love it. Awesome dude!

Hey Westies 14, thanks for the tips but I'm having issues and was wondering if you can direct me a bit better. I was looking for the "webby drywall sandpaper" and I can't find it. Could you send me a link of where I can purchase it or point me in the right direction? I also tried using some regular rubbing alcohol that I had at home but didn't really do anything to my sculpt. I read that you can use Mineral Spirits, is that what you were talking about?

I'm doing a Red Hood sculpt over here and I want it to have a glass smooth finish. I also read something that said to put alcohol on it then heat it up to get it to a wet point and quickly spray it with compressed air to get that finish. What do you think about that?

Sry about all the questions. I did drop you a shout-out in my thread. Come check it out and let me know what you think and any pointers you might wanna give me. Thanks again.

PS. When is your next update? Anxiously waiting!

They are called drywall sanding screens...

Re: Custom TMNT costume/mask project - "Real" Mutant Ninja Turtle

Here's a progress shot:

This is the most incredible take/re-interpretation of the TMNT that I've seen in a very very long time. This is incredible work. If I had any artistic talent whatsoever, this would thoroughly make me want to take up clay moulding.

Congratulations, and keep up the terrific work :):thumbsup

Amazing sculpt! Thanks for sharing the process;-)

Spent a bit more time on him yesterday. These are short sessions, as I've got a 5-month-old company to run, a 2.5 year old boy running around, and a new baby girl about a month away from joining us. This is a great unwinding activity though!

I'd say yesterday's session was the first where I actually really gave the rear of the piece some love - not just some haphazard broad strokes or texture stamping. There are these sort of bony ridges over the top of the head and down the back; each one needs to be nicely curved and edged. It's satisfying once you're seeing the results, but I've always been one to focus too much on the "fun" parts and sort of shortchange the rest, like drawing an awesome superhero as a kid and giving very little attention to giving the alley he's perched over an equal amount of character and quality. There's no getting around this though - if this sculpt is going to come to life as a mask, it needs to be equally well-executed over every inch of it.

A friend of mine who illustrates high-end limited edition stuff for bands and movies for a living has a hyper detailed style. He recently finished work on a new album with a character standing in a field, and ever blade of tall grass is precisely and individually rendered. He said "the only way to draw a field is to draw the field - all of it." That commitment to overall execution is a huge inspiration to me in wrapping this beast up! One you pour your mold, you don't get to go back and fix things. I want to make sure I "draw the whole field," so to speak.

Fantastic work! I absolutely love this interpretation. Your textures are brilliantly executed. I really look forward to seeing this progress into the molding stage and beyond.

wow, looks awesome!

i wish your design was used as a basis for the new live action movie.

i dread to think what Michael Bay is going to do!

I loved he original live action movie in 1990 and the sequel. The 3rd one, the look became too cartoony.

Your unique realistic turtle look would look outstanding on the big screen.

Thanks very much! Not to fear though - Bay's turtle flick has been shelved. By all accounts, the script was putrid. There was also a huge backlash against the notion of the turtles as aliens rather than mutant turtles (imagine that). Nickelodeon paid a lot for the property and it's good to see them pull back when it's going off-course. Their new show, while looking like pretty clunky CG animation, at least looks to feature some very traditional ninja turtles - and the toys based on the show are terrific, the figures are the best ones ever produced outside of NECA's, and the "Secret Sewer Lair" playset is something to see...
