"Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle - Update 5.2.15

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle! Update 9/1/12 (pg 9)

Apparently the new film has been pushed back but not cancelled. One of the interviews with Kevin Eastman said that the director wanted to see "Avatar and Rise of the Planet of the Apes level computer effects." I didn't find that exact article, but found another so you don't have to take my word for it.

That being said, I think this would be a fun and interesting new take for the turtles, and yours is coming along wonderfully. As a lover of the ninja turtles and an owner of a pet regular turtle, I am impressed at how each level of detal brings it closer to the real thing, but at the core your sculpt has a very human expression and the eyes convey intelligence and emotion.

Also, something to think about (but not to derail you after so much progress!), Eastman said that the turtles were mutated red-eared sliders, which makes sense because of the size they were and how common that type of turtle is to have for pets.

Inspire any ideas for the paint job?

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle! Update 9/1/12 (pg 9)

Pushed back is just as good - either way, it was due to a complete rewrite from what I hear. The pushback is more than just a release date. Hopefully they land on a story closer to the original concept!

I've read that about the red-eared turtles - I made sure to collect a lot of images of them when I started out on this sculpt! In the end, I'll likely do what Eastman and Laird did themselves and make them more generic green/brown turtle hybrids with the paintjob. Never say never though - since this mask will be molded and cast I'll have the opportunity to try out lots of different paintjobs on it.

Thanks again for your kind words and encouragement, everyone! I'll be working on him again this afternoon and I'll take pictures when I wrap.

OHH MAN! I really like it

Thanks!!! That's a valuable compliment coming from someone doing an impressive turtle build of their own. Your thread inspired me to get back to business here - I'm going to try silicone pulls of this now because of you!

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle! Update 9/8/12

When I was a kid, I had a short 'else-worlds' type run of TMNT by Michael Zulli. It was a 3 issue run, and the Turtles weren't anything like the campy, comedic versions most know. The turtles don't say much, if anything the entire run. There's no visible distinction as they all carry swords, and they lack the mask.

These can be found in a search for TMNT in a Complete Run of TMNT on The Pirate Bay.

I hate to disagree with your vision here and don't expect to change your mind but with a sculpt this realistic I think you would be doing a disservice to your entire piece if you didn't make a leather or fabric mask...IMO

I must have worded something poorly earlier in the thread! My buddy Kurt got the impression that I was sculpting in a mask as well. Not to fear - the red bandana I photoshopped in would be something I add on to the casting after the fact! I'd actually like to finish a couple masks off without bandanas. I won't be sculpting that in.

Absolutely love this. A convincing fresh take on a familiar subject is sometimes harder than replicating the original exactly.

Cool Im glad I changed your mind... JK

I'm totally speechless. This is absolutely amazing! I grew up on all things TMNT; can't wait to see it all together.

Thanks, everyone! I'll have an update on this guy soon - we had our little baby girl a bit early, and she set him back a bit in the most wonderful way possible - we just cleared space in the basement to finish him up and mold him!

In the meantime, I submitted the PS mockup of him for the Stan Winston School of Character Arts' costume design contest - the most "likes" on a facebook picture on their wall wins a year's access to their FX training videos! I love them, I've bought a few now - but I have a lot left to learn! If any of you are on facebook and want to help vote for my turtle, please follow this link and "like" the picture!

Thanks for your help!
