Done / Completed Ready Player One - ALL THREE Keys

Re: Ready Player One - Copper Key and Jade Key

The jade key is taking more time than estimate, due to intense hand polishing process, I will start shipping out copper keys so you guys will have something to play with while you wait. :)

And some good news for you, the first crystal key sample is getting close, here's a WIP showing the key, now it is made of glass so it's quite fragile but magnificent to look at. The sample is before the silver foil is applied, you may also notice the ring was missing on top, that is because it has to be made separately and attached afterwards, otherwise it will definitely broke off during production. A confirmed price will be announced after the first sample is confirmed.

This is incredible! How are you fabricating this out of glass? The detail is so fine!

If the glass is that fragile, might be better to make these out of a clear resin. I think the metal parts design were originally there probably for structural integrity had they made them for some scenes.

A clear plastic key is already available. The whole point is to make it from glass.

It's supposed to be a crystal key not a plastic key. What kind of glass is it? Is glass more durable or easier to work with than crystal?

Re: Ready Player One - Copper Key and Jade Key

Crystal is a more durable material to glass.
I believe that they probably looked at this the very same way and realized the key would need to be re-enforced, hence the covering around the grip, the neck ring, the upper shaft and insertion piece with crystal showing in the middle and the crystal glass on the combination block.

The crystal in you mind, is usually glass.

The method I’m using here, is called sand casting glass, it is very hard to get the surface clean and crisp on sand casting. This type of manufacturing is expensive but I’m satisfied with the outcome.

I’ll show detailed pictures when it comes back from post processing.

So will you be using Swarovski style lead glass (= crystal) or regular glass (like for windows and stuff)?
How fragile will your keys be?

This was my exact question. There's a big difference in refraction values between crystal and glass. Glass will be transparent with limited refraction of light while crystal has a higher refraction value, which is why it is often used to simulate diamond. It sounds like you're already planning on using crystal Kevin, which is a great idea, and it sounds like the manufacturing process is pretty intensive. I think we should hang tight and see what Kevin pulls together in terms of a post processing sample. He definitely hasn't disappointed in terms of materials on this run, so I can't imagine this key not looking incredible!

I am sure he will do an incredible job, the first two keys look fantastic and beyond what most would have expected.
Looking forward to seeing them in hand.

First to the key!

The weight and feel is excellent. Truly a beautiful piece. It will look great on display.

My only complaint is that I believe it to have been bent during shipping. It came in a small packaged envelope. The jade key will need significant reinforcement if it is to survive the journey.

Received mine at lunch today. :) Yep, a nice piece!

Agree on the packaging, my letter A on one side has a significant dent.
