Re-make of "Dune"

As always, a great breakdown with plenty of backstory info from New Rockstars.

WARNING FOR PT 2 SPOILERS, but let's be honest, we're probably at LEAST 3-5 years away from a sequel, so go ahead & watch. If you're like me you'll have forgotten by then.

Finally carved out some time to watch this film, this past weekend.

I loved it…it was so refreshing to be given a film that truly transported you “elsewhere” for two or more hours without having to have contemporary headaches / issues layered into it that pulled you out of the experience.

This was a great movie; which is something of a rarity today.

Great news on pt2. I was dreading it being pulled like so many other sequels and franchises had been.

One thing though and it's a genuine question, what's with the obsession over Zendaya? Every article puts her as if she was the superstar of the movie and "hopefully a much bigger role for her in part 2" and I'm just like "nobody read the books, right?".
I genuinely do not get the obsession, seen her in this and the first Spiderman, that's it, didn't feel she was that big a deal, what am I missing?

Anything beyond Paul recognizing her from his dreams, her being the daughter of Liet-Kynes, and her having Paul's children is an expansion of the character. Some things that were a product of the time it was written I am happy to see fiddled with. It makes sense for the neo-feudal society that's arisen in the Known Universe in the millennia since the Machine Crusade, but the Fremen sure as heck aren't part of that. They should be much more egalitarian and meritocratic.

It's a thing I've scratched my head over since she and Awkwafina became a thing over the last decade. They're good, they've won accolades, but their success has been very niche until recently. Not the sort of mainstream megastardom I tend to associate with other single-name personalities like Shakira, Beyonce, Cher, Prince, Sade, Elvis, Enya, etc.

I am pleased she's part of the MCU, regardless*. I like this version of MJ better than the one in the comics and in the Raimi/Maguire movies (and I do recommend seeing Far From Home). I also think she makes a good Chani, and agree that I'd like to see the character's role expanded to whatever extent doesn't break the book or the larger lore.

[*And frustrated that Marvel's already got their new Hawkeye/Kate Bishop series cast and in the works, as, after seeing her in Shang-Chi, I really wish Awkwafina's Katy could be the MCU's version of Kate Bishop. Bonus points if her family name could translate to some equivalent of "bishop".]

I'm sure she was used as the "teen" draw. Your average teen-on-the-street probably has little if no knowledge of what Dune is, but they know who she is.
That, and next to Jason Momoa and maybe Dave Bautista, she probably has the biggest name recognition of the entire cast.

Wasn't a fan of her as Chani. I really hope she steps it up for the sequel especially if Chani is going to have a larger role than in the book. I'd rather the story be as close to the book as possible but we'll see what happens. Hollywood hype is not exactly known for its accuracy, I wouldn't pay any attention to it. Her performance should speak for itself.

Her role is much more prominent in Dune Messiah. In the original novel she's basically Paul's anchor to his humanity and emotions. I'm not saying they can't expand or come up with something that's interesting but I don't think she is that much of a focus of the story.

Also I'm so so so happy that they addressed the fact that the Bene Gesserit has been preparing the myth for them and Paul just basically takes on that role for his own purposes. That is the key message of the novel but in most discussions it just gets to be changed into the traditional hero's journey narrative with Paul being a real saviour and messiah.

Hans Zimmer is mainly just bass notes and loud sound effects, this time with added chants, music failed to create the atmosphere for me, probably my biggest gripe. I fail to understand why he is regarded as a great composer.
I have often wondered that too, his music is really bland to the point of being instantly forgettable. It's funny how, what I would consider great contemporary composers like Ramin Djawdi or Klaus Badelt, came from the Zimmer music factory but have composed great scores like Iron Man, Game of Thrones and The Time Machine.
I just dont get the fawning over Zimmer. To each their own I suppose.

Parts of this I enjoyed, other parts were just - meh. The musical score, some of the casting (momoa, Chalamet) were "meh" to me, but I get it that others would differ. All the effects, sets, etc, were just fantastic - especially the ornithopters. As an aerospace engineer, I know something like that would be either impossible or impractical, but they actually got me to abandon my reality and embrace the concept. IMO this is the best of the three versions I've seen.

one of 'the best' - I give points for the lines from the Lynch version, A+ for creativity
