RANGER - From INTERSTELLAR

Hello All,

Took a break from some of the Studio Scale models to build up the Amazing Ranger spaceship from Interstellar. This has been one of my FAVORITE Sci-Fi ships ever.

I picked up this awesome Moebius Model Kit way back in 2015. It's a little over 10" long, and has some really great detail. The 'thrusters' aren't quite accurate, but the rest of it is Fantastic. I made a little mod to the upper thrusters, but the rest remained out of the box. I cut out the windows from the kit, but then put it on a shelf.

In late 2016, visiting friends in L.A. area, we were checking out “Burbank House of Hobbies”. I see this guy putting a beautifully built Ranger kit into the display case. He turns around, and Amazingly, it was none other than Mr. Ian Hunter himself! I introduced myself and he was Super Kind to tell me not only the cool things he did with this kit, but shared some of the incredible work he and his New Deal Studios team did working on the Big and Bigger Ranger models for the film. What a cool moment!!!

Fast forward over 5 years, and I found an opportunity to revisit this kit. So below, I’d like to share some completed pics of the model. Now it’s not an ‘IPMS’ quality build, as this was intended to just be a FUN BUILD. So over the last few weeks, here is the result. It just snowed yesterday, so it was a good opportunity to take some snaps of it flying over ‘Dr. Mann’s’ planet. (I photo shopped out the base/stand in a few).

I tried to recreate the weathering as close as possible to both the Full Size ship and the big studio model. The rivets around the windows and the solar panels came out pretty good for this scale. Overall, I’m pretty happy with the final result.

So, with that, here we go!

Wow, and WOW!!!!!!!!!!!

And House of Hobbies is a wonderful little shop!
Anyone in the Los Angeles area who's never been there should definitely take to time to visit!

That is pretty fantastic

For those rough textured surface panels, was that molded in or did you use come kind of fabric covering? It looks like the perfect texture for the Space Shuttle that I have in my stash

Great build up. my love for this ship or the film have not faded with time. This ship felt so familiar but some kind of tech we don’t have yet. Space shuttle, Planet of the Apes Icarus and ??? . My kit is in my pile of kits waiting for when I retire at the rate I build. LOL. Bummer no kits for the Landers. They sort of reminded me of blocky stubby Space 1999 Eagles.

Genius way of doing the thermal protection blankets - came out great!

Really awesome job Sean!

Thanks All!!!! Very kind!!

The thermal blankets were made from first aid tape. Even with sharp Xacto sometimes the ends frayed. With patience it could be really clean but I just pushed fast.
I cut and applied in alternating angles to get that nice texture like they did.

Agree this ship really felt ‘real’. Some day I’d like to build one that’s like 3’ with interior.

Thanks again!
Sean

Nice work, I have wanted to build the Mobius kit I have in my stash, now seeing this I might just crack the box open.

Great work/paint job:cool::cool:(y)(y) Difficult to gage the size from the pics; I had to re-read your post: 10" longo_O I thought it was bigger than that!
Great story meeting one of the original model maker(y)

Wow, your model is so well done. I love the subtle weathering and the slight mismatched panel hues. These subtleness really help sell the model’s realism.

Also jealous you met Ian on your trip to Burbank House of Hobbies! That’s my homebase and I have NEVER bumped into him in my numerous trips there over the years.

Nice work!!! I can't wait to build a version of this ship, it has been one of my favorite ships ever since I saw that film.

Well executed. I second wondering how that texturing was done.

Just watched the movie again. Great job... weathering not overdone and those windows with the gloss are just perfect!
