RANCOR Sculpt FINISHED PAGE 7!

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Very nice! You will solve the tusk problem, though it would not be hard for the modeler to fix!

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

too bad for the tusks, besides that the casting looks great.
I hope you manage to get a perfect cast with the above advise.
Maybe you will run into the same problem with the fingernails, any thoughts on that?
I had the same problem in the past with a similar cast, i solved it by actualy adding more clay on the sculpt to the more fragile parts.
Almost like a sprue you see on injection molded kits.
I casted it with these "thin" parts with the sprue attached directed upwards so the airbubbles went past the important parts and ended up in the sprues.
Maybe upside down will work aswell:)
This will solve some of the airbubble issues.
Give it a thought.
Succes with the rest of the Rancor

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Thanks Voodoocaster, yes, I was planning to add sprues to the fingers which should help the resin flow into these areas. The tusk issue should not be a problem now as I have slit the area and will hand paint resin into this area each time.

I've been moulding the main body at the moment, but mixed up the silicone slightly too thick when I was putting it on. I had to wait for it to set and then carefully tweezer the whole lot off. It probably would have been fine but I didn't want to chance any air bubbles.

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Very quick update. I've taken the body off the stand and been reworking the back where it was attached with brass tubing. Because the monster clay is soft when handling I decided to cover the front in silicone - two layers - the first as a detail coat and then a second thicker coat. I'm fairly pleased with the back as it a pain getting the relative symmetry correct. The spikes are not too bad - I was going to redo them but I think they have a bit of randomness about them at the moment. There is a high spot on one of the plates which this photo has highlighted so I'll probably do a little more work on it before moulding.

Thanks for looking!

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Holy cow! This is an awesome sculpt! And the amount of details put into those wrinkles and blobs... I'm amazed!

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Thanks Alan and Chanfan! I think phenomenal is over-exaggerating it, but I can't wait to get one painted up to see what it looks like. Got a very busy few days on but if things go well I may be at the pouring stage by the end of next week.

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Okay, it's going to be an average kit that no one will want... that make you feel better? ;) Waiting for more photos of cast parts for this less than phenomenal kit.

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

This is a very cool sculpt. :) A few posts back you decided to keep some randomness in the back, I believe? In my opinion, it is very important to keep some randomness to make the realism pop out. It is more natural. For example: Horses can be right-handed or left-handed. What that translates to in the anatomy is that the horse's shoulder muscles won't be even. If it is right-handed the right shoulder muscles will be slightly large, for example, than the left. Keep up the awesomeness! :)

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

I think phenomenal sums it up just fine! Good wordsmithery Alan ;)

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Hi there,

I've been lurking a while in this thread and this is indeed the best rancor replica sculpt wip to date ... congratulations christrom.

Which reminds me that Iain Mccaig mentioned last summer at Celebration 2 in the VIP room that he and Doug Chiang were asked
to draw several Rancors ... possibly for Episode VII ... so who knows you might be on to something ... big :)

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Thanks very much Sym-Cha!

I'm getting close to the finish line now. The legs and torso have been cast, and all I need to do now is cast the arms. These resin casts will serve as masters which I will then do a run from. I've found the casting process to be very difficult and so I think I would be wise to hand it over to someone with a lot more expertise than me.

I'll be looking to get a run of them done by someone in the UK (if anyone has any good sources for casting people by all means let me know) and then I'll be able to start offering a kit. As soon as I have a completed figure and some quotes organised I'll put an interest thread up, and update here too. Really looking forward to actually having a painted figure done.

Thanks for all the encouragement as always, it really spurs me on. I'll update as soon as I can!

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Wow!!Looks fantastic.
Great job on the skin textures and scales,to me this looks more convincing and better than the skin on the original puppet.
Good luck with moulding the rest of the sculpture.

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Cheers Voodoo!

Did this little photoshop experiment with the original un-painted sculpt!

I quite like it :)

Re: RANCOR Sculpt

Chris brought the castings around at the weekend and it really is looking superb. The detail is stunning.
