Would like to know if you can deactivate an old double barrel shotgun.(I.E. make it unable to fire a live round) And then shorten the barrel to below the 18 inch limit.Just for the purpose of having it as a prop. Please let me know. Thanks

Yes, you can but the procedure will vary, once you destroy the receiver it's no longer a gun, if you want to shorten the barrel, it would be HIGHLY advisable that you solid plug the barrels as well so that you are not in possession of a short barrel that could find it's way into service on another receiver...

The only legit way to know what the ATF would be happy with is to write up a detailed description of what you plan to do to destroy it, and get them to sign off on it... That will likely mean destroying the receiver and possibly replacing it with a newly created and machined one that can't be made to fire...

You can also leave it as a legal weapon but totally destroy the barrel's function as mounting a dummy unserviceable destroyed barrel shorter than 18" is technically not illegal as it's not a serviceable barrel... Again consult the ATF and get a signed and written letter back from them "OK"ing the outlined procedure if you want to be legit...

My advise look for a blank, airsoft or dummy gun as it will save you a lot of grief...

Ok...Could you tell me where I could get a good blank firing double thats made good out of steel?

Unless you plan on telling the cops or FBI, then I would not worry about it, just cut to the size you want.
If you want to make it where she cant fire, just file the hammer tips down smooth

BAD, BAD, BAD advice, you do realize that you just told the guy to commit a Federal Felony as well as State level Felony that can put him in the clink for 10,15 or 30 years and find him owing $100,000s in fines?

Sorry to be BLUNT but that is horribly stupid advice!

The ATF is ruthless on cases like this, as is most local law enforcement...

Here is a $150 solution...

I would leave the gun intact and stick on a solid dummy barrel. At least you can turn it back into a gun.

Now this is what i'm talking about. If you do this then please do it legally and don't go out half shot.....You'd be looking at Federal time for this and a fine that would break you for a long time to come..Like the gent who made the Constantine brass knuckles a while back. Please do your research and find out before hand. Thanks for the info Ex

It can be done legally. It is called deactivating or demilling. It would require altering the shotgun so it can NEVER be used as a firearm again. Depending on the firearm this would require removing the internals, a bit of snapping and grinding off of some pins, welding the hammer(s) and trigger into place, enlarging holes, and filling the barrels with rod and blind welding them into place. More or less. Correct documentation will be required to prove that the object is no longer a firearm. This can be done by a competent gunsmith.

This is done all the time for Police Officers that turn their old service weapons into plaques when they retire. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions.

You can buy them done as such already on Gunbroker.com they have pretty much every kind done like this, some rare ones to

You could also get a permit to build a SBS, and have your prop be fully functional. There's a tax involved, and it in itself is more expensive than a dummy gun. Then tack on the costs of getting the barrels and you're in pretty deep. Plus, there's all kinds of federal and state regulations that don't take kindly to being violated. If I were you, I would just get a dummy gun. Less headache.

If you are serious about it, call your gunsmith and have him legally deactivate the weapon, and cut it down for you. If he offers that service. Some don't. Make some calls locally, you should find someone who can do it.

It's not the kind of thing you should do on your own if you're not familiar with working on guns, and are unlicensed.

Honestly, your best bet is the replica listed above anyway. I have one, and they are quite nice!

Do as you like, I do as I want. I dont plan on having the ATF over nor would I tell anyone I have one, but we do stuff different in the south, things we dont worry about.

Very few invite the ATF over or cops, but It only takes an 'anonymous' phone call, and a warrant will be served and all can come down hard... Be it a family member, someone visiting your house, ex-domestic partner, your children's friends, someone walking by your house that thinks they saw something or even someone that just came across your very post here on this forum or in a Google search and is an over zealous do-gooder...

Don't be in a hurry to defend yourself, nobody is trying to tell you what to do. You can do whatever you want and the possible consequences are your burden, but OP asked how to do this legally and telling him to share in your reckless dis-regard is not good advice.

Am a bad boy :)

And lets hope no one ever knocks on your door with one of these in hand, because it will change your life in ways you can only know when it happens and will cost you a small fortune even if you are INNOCENT...

This is true. I said what I would do. But then again, if it was real, I would not mess it up. You could also pull the stock off, take the pin out and have the hammers filed flat, then have the thing welded together in side of the pin halfs, You could not shot it, you could not load it.

That is your opinion and the ATF, local police and court might not share it, doesn't matter if you can't load or shoot it as is, it's more of a can it be made to function again within means... To really remove the gun from gun status the receiver has to be destroyed per ATF specs... Fully intact deactivated guns are a touchy issue after the pre-1968 DEWAT fiasco with a weld here or there trophy weapons being patched back to operational in short, so it now takes much more to legally deactivate...

Thus the reason I advised that any modification be signed off on by the ATF, at least then you have something beyond your own opinion...
