Question about lifts for shoes

I need to add a little height to my Red Tornado costume, as I'm only 5'5". I know that I won't be able to look like I'm 6' tall or anything, but I'd like to look a little taller next to the others going in costume with me. I don't know what to look for in lifts for shoes. Where do I find them? How do I pick out the shoes? Do I just get something that's a size or so bigger than usual? I could use any advice from people who have used them.

You will need bigger shoes.

It's like putting on high-heels, and then putting on boots on top of that.

I'm 5'8" and use 3" lifts with my Darth Vader costume. With the added height of the boot itself, the 3" lift, and the extra height of the helmet I'm come in just a hair over 6'5" but not quite 6'6". That's 9 extra inches (and when can a guy not use 9 extra inches...... of height).

I usually wear a size 10 boot but I bought a costume boot listed as 13-14 and it's snug because the bulk of my foot is in the boot shaft and not in the foot part. It's more about having a shoe/boot with extra room in the ankle area to accodimate how the lift moves your foot up.

Will the lifts still work with low-top shoes? I was just going to try a casual pair and dye them the right color.

If you go with shoelifts.com, the tallest ones are not wearable. horrible design, painful, and not practical at all. I'd suggest making your own.
Shoes with the tallest inside are best and boots are always better than shoes. To get the most without looking like Gene Simmons, have a 1 inch thick sole all the way around, with another inch heel, then inside, put a 1 inch insole with another 1-2 inch heel inside the shoe. You can get 5 inches while only appearing to add 1 from the front.

Buy a couple pair of cheap flip flops (beach sandals, thongs, whatever you call'em)
and cut them to fit inside, then wedge some foam wedges under the heels. Re cut and adjust until you get as high as you can while still being comfortable.

What kind of shoes are you planning on using?

I know CAboots.com makes some red superhero (superman) type boots that you could get away with adding some extra thick soles and a heel to.

I'm thinking about something that would look like a work boot. Ma Hunkel was a riveter, and she probably would have had her own pair or her husband's lying around the house. Her feet weren't drawn with a lot of detail, and I've seen them look like anything from boots to generic shoe-shaped things. There are a few panels where they even look like they could be casual shoes/sneakers with yellow socks pulled over them.

In another thread, someone mentioned the idea of stacking foam wedges or pink carving foam. I kind of like that idea, maybe with a pair of insoles on top of the stack. I'll probably go with a pair of men's shoes, because they'd be wider and have a bigger inside to work with.
