QMx ST Comm Badges

Cheers Alan :thumbsup I really don't get what I'm doing wrong, when I search I come up with nothing?? I must be just crap at looking for things lol :D

My pleasure mate :thumbsup

.... now stop moaning & buy the darned thing already :lol

Waaay too shiny and overpriced - give me a resin cast, sanding papers, primer, Tamiya Black, Aluminium and Gold and I can to it too for less…
Why is it so hard to make a metal version, that IS NOT SHINY?!

I just found out about the new 1995+ ones. Notice how they photograph the badges in such a way to disguise how reflective they are... If they KNOW they look bad so reflective, why do they keep finishing them that way? Still, since I'm a sucker I'm going to buy one anyway. Maybe I can make my own mold, cast it in aluminum and plate it with gold and platinum in a matte finish.

You know you can just hit it with a scotch brite pad and it'll have a dull finish, right?

Know of any picts that exist where someone did that? I'd love to see the results.

I picked up one of TNG style from a retailer on Amazon who offered for about $15 and free shipping. I mounted on the back using the magnet through the plexiglass of my MR TNG phaser as part of the display. Honestly, I think the shine looks less repulsive in person but it could have been a better color match (IMHO).

As a replica, you have to either except is as a decorative accessory to wear on your clothes, or a highly conceptual idealized prop. If the latter, I think it would have been interesting if the front delta plate was removable with circuitry like in the tech manuals.

All-in-all, my big gripe is the lack of black detailing on the delta shield sides. I guess they had no real good way to apply the coloring crisply. I think they should have made the entire shield as a separate piece so that could do just that or make a separate piece for each color component (gold=oval, silver=shield face, and black=shield border. Even those $15 plastic sound ones that they used to sell years ago had a nice border.

I think I will like the new Voyager style better because they do not have to worry about the border. But I agree with what was said above about the similarities of those offered commercially in the 90's and so on. Does not seem to be breaking a lot of new ground in that regard. If i can get this for $15 as well, I probably will pick it up.

I did it to my TNG badge. There's a picture in one of these threads. Possibly the chirping comm badge thread or a previous QMx thread. Good luck finding it though with the search function still useless.

I don't think that would work very well. Assuming the outer finish is thick enough and you have the skill to not rub right through it, you would still have a burnished finish, not a dull matte like the screen props. Maybe it can be done, but I'm not brave (or rich) enough to try.

It doesn't bother me either way, I quite like them shiney or dull I'd have both or either :D

Well, I got my QMx 2370s combadge yesterday. I actually like it much more than the TNG badge, but it still has the same issues--inaccruate colors and shiny finish. There are some surface flaws as well, due to cheap manufacturing and poor QA. That said, it's not a bad piece.

Love to see some picts if you can.

This is the most frustrating part about these replicas to me. They spent all this money on expensive tooling for metal versions with a shape as accurate as possible but leave this big ugly seam along the edge of the delta, and then they don't paint them properly. So close, and yet so infuriatingly far away.

I got one from Amazon for $15 as well and immediately regretted it - the silver delta is ever so slightly misaligned which only draws attention to the weird seam. I'll try a matte or satin coat for the gold/silver when I try to improve it - thanks for the tip.

The $16 badges that Rod.com sells outclass them in every way. Accuracy, finish, detailing. And they should, since they're still made by HMS as were the originals, aren't they?

I have never had one to look at so I can not comment on how good they are. But there not from my masters. Nor are the QMX ones.
