Project: Steampunk

Thank you! :lol On a couple other boards I seem to be winning some people over as well! Steampunk is on the verge of "jumping the shark" here pretty soon, once the general public grabs hold of it, it'll probably be ruined. Hot Topic and a couple other "goth" designers have already started pumping out low quality SP crap.

Steampunk CAN'T be cookie cutter, everyone and everything needs to be unique. It's supposed to be a DIY project, not something you put together from a boxed kit. My creative heart will die the day I see officially licensed Nerf guns that are already painted brass and copper... :p and I'm sure it'll be any day now :rolleyes

I have a bit of practice :cool

Course I won't mention the number of saw blades I ended up snapping on the spoon :rolleyes

I agree with what you said about Steampunk's popularity being on the verge of becoming tired. ("Jumping the Shark")

It's a real shame, because, as a fan of the style, I feel that there hasn't been a fully realized use of the style. Where you can point to a work and say THAT is it! Maybe "City of Lost Children." Maybe.

Jeff, your skills never cease to amaze me! The bowler is a nice touch too. Look forward to seeing more updates and SDCC pix. (yup, gonna miss another year) Like your choice in pants too. I have a green pair that look JUST like that.

May be looking ya up when you start offering the absinthe spoons. (an Imp logo version would be kinda cool, hint hint)

Following my Rocketeer Project thread I thought I'd do it again for my new project of the year for the SD Comic-Con, a Steampunk Airship Captain. I was really impressed last year with the creativity and designs that people did and the prop maker inside of me was revived! Finally a project that is TOTALLY open to imagination and design.

Personally, I feel slapping some paint and watch gears on nerf guns is NOT Steampunk. They're painted plastic guns, and look like it. The back bone of Steampunk is DIY (do it yourself), with real and "period" correct materials. And that's what I'm striving to do.

I'll be updating as I go.

Disneyland had Bat's Day (Gothic Day) a few months ago, and I threw a basic one together:

I'm COMPLETELY redoing the costume head to toe. I think all I'm keeping is my shirt, goggles and the small detail parts.

I decided to go with a Bowler style hat instead of the cap.

I removed the brown ribbon and replaced it with leather, brass rivets and 2 hand cut brass plates with watch part details.

What other than Absinthe being the choice of drink for any Airship Captain! I'm also on an Absinthe kick anyways :p. I found an Absinthe label I liked, printed it, glued it onto thicker paper, put some wrinkles and creases in it. And of course any true Absinthe drinker needs their trusty sugar spoon! But I didn't want to just use one off the shelf. So I designed one in CAD, printed it out and hand cut my own out of Sterling Silver.

I'm still playing with adding a design on the handle

The other thing any good SP needs are their trusty goggles. I found a neat pair:

Which of course I started modding out. I removed the black enamel, exposing the Brass underneath, as well as removed the material head strap and replaced it with hand stitched leather, added a couple small detail parts. I'm still planning on adding a few more details and replace the black material over the nose area with leather.

Along with goggles, a time piece is needed. I'm planning on redoing it, I threw it together in a little over an hour as a LAST minute idea the night before Bats Day. I added the watch cogs on the dial (yes it still runs) and made the leather strap.

Originally I wore leather field boots but I'm planning on something else for the Con. These were the hand cut Copper detail pieces I had on the boots:

Here's the shoes I'm working with now, I'm planning on making a cool pair of leather spats/leg gaiters to go over the top of them.

I'm currently working on my ray gun. As I said I want to keep as true as I can with the materials. I'm using this as my base:

Ready for modding:
steam1012-vi.jpg

I'm cutting about 3 inches off the front and then sanding and reshaping the grip a bit. I'm using Brass, Copper, Acrylic Tubing (only because I don't want to risk glass breaking), Vacuum Tube and using a tube to protect it (only other plastic I'm using, again for safety) for my Barrel:

Here's the barrel design all together:

I plan on making a Solo-esk leg holster for it. I'm also planning on a small derringer style ray gun pistol and make a leather shoulder holster and rig.

I have a couple small detail parts in mind, skeleton keys, a leather pouch, etc.

I'll be updating it as I go, it's been a real fun project so far! 3 weeks to go!!! :confused

Would you be prepared to divulge the source of the boots? They would be a great addition to my Sherlock Holmes costume. The costume is coming together nicely. Great stuff on the Absinthe spoon. I obviously need a good scroll saw. Any words of wisdom on said item?
Look forward to your reply.

Jedi Holmes.
(the Game's afoot. Ever thought of doing Watson?)

I think I may still have my saw. I may have to give it a shot. Look forward to your updated pix.

Just some real quick shots of my ray gun progress. After messing with the flintlock body for awhile, I just wasn't happy with how it was looking. I'm rethinking it at the moment. I also decided to lengthen the tube a bit more and also hand cut a piece out of brass to add to the design. I cut down the upper support rod and will cap both with copper tubing. I also bolted the brass cap to the tube with brass hobby nuts & bolts. I'm still playing around with what I'm going to put on the inside of the tube.

Looking good! Did you roll the piece brass or was it a tube? I guess it doesn't really matter, as it looks great either way!

Really love what you are doing here! (despite being more of a dieselpunk fan).

I agree with you 100% about the Nerf guns. Steampunk should be about craftmanship, and objects should be “honest” and true to their materials and construction. Something should only look like brass if it is brass. Copper details should be made of copper – end of story. Parts should be sewn, riveted or bolted together, not hastily botched with a glue gun. You’ve done everything right so far.

Beautiful work! I’ll be following your progress with interest.

(And for next year, I want to see you go all out with the dieslepunk genre – because steam is just not dirty enough :lol )
