Project: Steampunk

Nice attention to detail on each piece. I'm especially loving the hat and that watch. I really like the fastener you used on it. Very inventive.

Wow, very cool stuff. My personal favorite is the watch and the goggles, although it's all very cool. I agree with all here about the nature of SP. I've not had the chance to get into it much myself, but always admire those who pride themselves on the uniqueness and quality of such projects.

Saw a pretty cool paintball gun SP variation last year at Oklahoma D-Day from a vendor there. The attached pic isn't the greatest, but should give you the idea.

Thanks guys! The count down to SD Comic-Con is on!!! :lol

After messing around with the flintlock handle, I just couldn't get any angles I liked out of it. Soooooo.... I started looking elsewhere for a neat grip. I stumbled on an AWESOME donor gun!

A wood rubber band gun!

I cut down to what I wanted:

I did a quick wood varnish on it to see the wood color, cut out brass grip frames, my creast out of copper, and leather grip. I'm still working on it, this is just sitting together to see what it looks like so far, nothing is permanently mounting yet.

More soon!

Big fan of steampunk. There were (are?) a couple of guys who made amazing and working verisons of SP computer keyboards. Very original, looked amazing--great reinvention of old meets new.

Looking forward to seeing updated work from you.

Thank you! :lol On a couple other boards I seem to be winning some people over as well! Steampunk is on the verge of "jumping the shark" here pretty soon, once the general public grabs hold of it, it'll probably be ruined. Hot Topic and a couple other "goth" designers have already started pumping out low quality SP crap.

Steampunk CAN'T be cookie cutter, everyone and everything needs to be unique. It's supposed to be a DIY project, not something you put together from a boxed kit. My creative heart will die the day I see officially licensed Nerf guns that are already painted brass and copper... :p and I'm sure it'll be any day now :rolleyes

GOD! Tell me about it! I posted something like this in a rant in a journal for Deviant Art, though, I also added something about the over use of clock gears as well. Not that I don't like clock gears, but only as an accentuation to a piece, not as the indicative aesthetic that defines the piece. I see too many people paint things brassy color and glue or solder clock gears to them and call them "Steampunk" and that really is annoying. You mentioned the Nerf gun thing...yeah, like that, only with clock gears glued to them XD

Just you wait! They'll start making cast aluminum clock gears plated in brass soon with the fake Goth and Punk clothes right next to the fake safety pins with pins on the back. XD

Still, this is a great suit. I love the bowler hat and the absinthe spoon is a nice hand made touch! I mean, you could have bought one, but hand made with a jewelers saw? out-STAND-ing! I am also loving that ray gun too! and the goggles! seriously, I could go on ogling this suit and especially the accessories all day. ^_^

Thanks!

Yeah I've tried to keep the gears to a minimum, but all of the ones I have are put together in a way that they look more like a piece of jewelry rather than just a single gear slapped on. I stacked gears, cogs, and other movement pieces as well as hands together. And yes I've already seen cast gears being used, I guess a scrap book company sells a small set that a bunch of nerfpunks are using.

Well for me it's nothing special, since I am a Jeweler :p it's just turning around from my Prop Bench to my Jeweler's Bench :)

Oh god...it's already starting XD I can't believe with all the clocks out there to open someone really did make fake gears XDDD I did think of using a reworked clock gear once to hold an LED in the end of my Steampunk sonic Screwdriver but I would have removed the teeth from the gear to make it look like it's not a clock gear XD

LOL! Yeah, being a jeweler WOULD help I think XD That would also explain your high levels of attention to detail and symmetry too.

Worked on the ray gun a bit more today, ALMOST FINISHED! :cool

I still need to install the grips, not sure if I should dye the leather or not...
And sand a bit of soldered areas but pretty much done!

The rear vial can come out and I filled several of them with some of my neon yellow Battern's Jewelry flux, and did some blue ones using dish soap. I'll have those in my belt holster rig. I haven't painted the base of the vial or attached the detail area for it.

Close up view of the vacuum tubes inside, might still play around with it.

So far, NOTHING on this gun has been glued (other than the vial caps). It's all either soldered or bolted in, and it's SOLID, no squeaky or loose parts!

More soon!!!

^ lol I did make blue vials as well, :p

But totally unintentional. I've never seen that picture above.

Loving the outfit and weapon. Have you a steampunk alter ego?

Steampunk is a state of mind me thinks. It allows one to seperate oneself from the 9-5 normal joe and have a bit of fun outside the norm.
I started by creating a character and designing on paper how he would look. Although all the items were bought not made it was a serious work in progress finding the right items to fit the mental image. The guy who made the monocle is a fantastic artist and I feel honored to have one of his pieces. www.brazendevice.com

Baron Linkshander at your disposal ( I am an arch nemesis of course so be carefull)

I've yet to design and build a discombobulator to wield in a menacing manner but your work has inspired me to get cracking.

cool costume!

I'm not big into the whole persona thing. I'm patterning my costume around an Airship Captain that is an Airship-Pirate hunter, hence no skull and crossbones like a lot of people that are doing Airship Captains/crew members.

wow everything else is so rockin' - I think you need to work on the trigger assembly some more. Can't wait to see the gun again! Awesome job.
