Primer issues with resin kit

Hi all,
I'm trying to get some input on primers to use on resin kits.
I recently picked up a resin gun model and had used Tamiya surface primer as my base coat. I had to mask some areas off when spraying my top coat, and when I took off the tape, it just peeled everything down to bare resin. :confused

I'm no stranger to resin kits. I've built many of them before, using exactly the same materials and techniques. I'm a big fan of Tamiya paints. They lay down extremely smooth, and I've never had any problems with them adhering before, even on resin.

I've stripped the model back down to bare resin all over, and I want to try a different primer this week sometime. What have you used with good results? I've heard of 'self-etching' primers. Do they bond better with resin type plastics? Speaking of plastic, has anyone tried the Krylon Fusion on resin? Good? Bad?

Appreciate any advice!
Eric

Well typically when primer peels off its due to two things, mold release still on the part, or the resin they used is cheap crap or they didnt mix the correct ratios and its leaching oil. Hopefully its mold release as you can rarely do anything about the leaching. Try washing the part with soap and water first, then alcohol. Also you may want to try a different paint like VHT primer or Plasticote primer. These are both laquer based primers and lay down nice and smooth.

good luck

Use a self etching primer like Duplicolor, it will stick to anything. You can get it at any auto parts store.

Thanks for the replies. :thumbsup
I've seen 'weeping' resin before, and this doesn't appear to be the case with this gun. There's no tackiness or patches that appear 'wetter' on the surface.
I washed the parts really well with soap and water, then went back a second time with some Comet on an old toothbrush. So that thing is definitely clean now!
I've used Duplicolor before. I'll probably pick up a can this week and give it a try.

I had the same problem once with a resin scout trooper blaster kit. I just washed it with soap and warm water and then wipe it with acetone. Primer went on well after that. Oh, and I used the Krylon Interior-Exterior Grey Primer.

Yeah, Wally world primer is a pretty good primer considering the cheap price, you just gotta let it dry real good before sanding.

Well, I went with some Duplicolor "scratch filling" primer. I didn't have a whole lot of time to run around to a bunch of different stores.
I gave it 2 light coats and it laid down really smooth. I'll give it some extra drying time, and then try to apply and peel off some blue painters' tape and see how it does before I paint my top coats.
Wish me luck!

X2 from me - Duplicolor works great. That's assuming you did a good job cleaning the mold release off of the kit.

I use undiluted Simple Green and scrub all surfaces with an old toothbrush to clean my kits before I begin working on them (regardless of whether they're resin, vinyl, or styrene), and I've never had a problem removing mold release and getting a good, clean surface. Just another option you can try.

I used to use undiluted Simple Green too. I stopped because I found that it does indeed leave a film. Lost the paint on several models after I THOUGHT I had scoured them well with Simple Green. Tread lightly. I went to a combination of a product called "crud cutter" and Bon Ami mixed in a slurry.

Well, the Duplicolor seems to have worked like a champ!
I let it dry for 24 hours, then tried a small area with blue painters' tape. Didn't have any issues.
I masked off the sections that needed to be masked and sprayed on some Testors metalizer paint. Peeled off the tape, and the primer stuck!
Hooray!
Thanks for all the input, guys.

Ditto on the Dupli-color. ;) It's great stuff. I wouldn't recommend it for styrene, as it's too strong, but it's awesome for resin. It's all I use. You can get it at just about any auto parts store. I was told it's very similar to the zinc oxide the military uses. It does stick to virtually anything.:thumbsup

Thanks for the heads-up! I'll be sure to be cautious when using it in the future; guess I've just been lucky so far.
