Prestige - Leg Brace

If you haven't seen "The Prestige", you're seriously missing out on a great film.

In the film, one of the characters wears a leg brace. Does anyone have any closer shots of this brace, and/or further information about this particular piece? Perhaps one of you intrepid experts could tell me where to turn to research it further?

Many thanks.

I pulled together some screen caps for reference. I'm not sure which keywords to use on Google, and I'm not finding any more information on old-style leg braces like this.

I'm completely unfamiliar with leatherworking, so I'm left wondering what kind of leather you folks think may have been used to build this, as well as how it is sewn/attached to the rods.

The rods themselves look like a steel alloy, linked with a hinge pin. Would I find such a thing at the hardware store, with just the necessity of bending and drilling? Or does anyone have a better suggestion? The purpose, of course, seems to be for keeping the leg/knee aligned straight and restricted in one direction of hinged movement, so an alternate metal would be appropriate as long as it didn't tend to buckle or bend.

Any feedback, thoughts, or suggestions would be highly appreciated.
