STAR TREK: FINAL FRONTIER
For the modern official take, we have Star Trek: Final Frontier (No relation to Star Trek V: The Final Frontier). This series was to take place in the 26th century long after the events of Nemesis. You gotta give the developers some credit for wanting to take Star Trek back to the old days of "seeking out new life and new civilizations." and not fighting insane romulan associated rock miners who want to destroy the Federation.
Yep.
Interesting.
I wish they had been able to get this animated Trek made. Sounded pretty cool:

To turn this back in the direction of Abrams-verse dogpiling, I have three problems - in addition to some previously mentioned here:
one is a fairly throwaway line, where Kirk informs the crew that Spock had "resigned his commission." He most certainly did not. He relieved himself of command, which is not at all the same thing.
The second is a basic plot element: a star which can, on going supernova, potentially destroy the entire galaxy. Now, either Spock was speaking metaphorically (the destruction of Romulus would lead to a political imbalance, resulting in war) or I call shenanigans.
Lastly, why bother to dig a hole in the planet just to plant a black hole? Here's a concept: a black hole born on the surface, or even in the atmosphere, is really going to work just as well. In fact, it solves the whole problem of your ship being vulnerable while waiting for your Romulan post hole digger to get done.
Overall I did find the movie to be fun, but IMHO it doesn't stand up very well to a close inspection.
