Pointers regarding electroplating

I'd like to get some information and tips on electroplating of small (not bigger than fist-size) resin props. I'm interested in the basics:

1. how to prep a resin model for electroplating (what primer to use, etc)
2. what issues have to be considered?
3. what metals are best suitable for plating resin?
4. how to best protect the plated finish? (if necessary)
5. where to go to have a small run or single pieces electroplated?
6. Expected cost depending on metal, size, and number of pieces

Any tips and pointers would be greatly appreciated.
