Playmates toy instruction sheets hint at fuctions of Abrams-movie Trek props

What's with the manual flipping of the phaser barrel in the toy ? :unsure I hoped it would just twirl itself with a switch. Kinda sad about that. And no auto flip on the communicator? Heck even the old Mego ones had that..:thumbsdown

I bet that when you press side button, the phaser nozzles AUTOMATICALLY FLIPS from STUN to VAPORIZE via a built-in spring mechanism...but then to set it BACK to stun, you have to flip it back manually.

Read the instructions -- it looks like, from what they say, this MIGHT be the case.

As for comm grid flipping manually, the original series communicator grids never flipped automatically -- had to be flipped with hand-action, and I imagine it will be the same with new movie communicator.

Those MEGO walkie talkies were HORRID, and looked NOTHING like the actual props -- oversize, WRONG color (blue??) and the grid didn't even have holes in it.

The original series props still look best to me...although I must say the new movie phasers look pretty damn sexy...sleek, dangerous, and a gentle nod in design to the TOS phasers.

That what I got out of it, too.

Yep, I bet you're right.

I think that the design is horrible, it reminds me of a garden hose nozzle. Flip it one way, it shoots a stream, flip it the other way, it shoots a spray...Wait! Maybe that's the plan, a line of Star Trek gardening tools!

One reason the Kirk head sculpt may not be that close is because of costs. I don't know if it is still so, but at one time the toy manufactures used to have to pay extra to the actor if the face was the actors. One reason the "Armageddon" sculpt of Bruce Willis's action figure was so close is because they paid him for the rights. There have been law suits in the past because an actor felt that the toy's face was too close to theirs.

David.

It's totally possible, as I've heard that certain actors either withhold likeness rights or charge extra for them, but I can't believe Paramount wouldn't have all kinds of toy clauses written into their contracts for properties like Star Trek. I'm also not sure any of the actors in this film have the kind of clout to demand extra fees for their likeness anyway.

And like it was already mentioned, the Kirk is the worst of them all. While you have to close your eyes and imagine the Kirk figure looks like Chris Pine, with the rest you only have to close one eye and squint with the other for it to look like the actor it's supposed to represent.

I just think Playmates is clueless. These things are going to be warming pegs all summer and I think the possibility of the second series actually happening in order to complete the bridge playset is bordering on fantasy.

YEah, the actors who had the kind of clout were on a very short list. Even then, Trek isn't something they would let go without the toy lines, like they do with Mission: Impossible (Tom Cruise will not allow his likeness on products - or wouldn't in the past. Maybe it's a Dianetics thing and that would steal his soul or something.)

Shatner and Nimoy have full likeness approval, it just means they have to see product before it is approved. It rarely stops a product.
For the new film, I would guess that no one except Nimoy has that approval.

P.S. Glad to hear others like Ent. D. Thanks for the kind words Neon!

Of course they were HORRID :lol. that's part of the charm of them. Childhood memories of hours of play trump accuracy for me :love

So true!!!

Again, to me these are toys! Not statues or real props but toys! For the price point and all, I say they are great!

My first thought was these must be action figures from "Star Trek XI: The Return of Wesley Crusher."

What about a Shia Lebeouf (sp?) action figure...I see a close resemblance :lol

Okay, you got me there -- but my inaccurate-props-of-choice were the phaser/communicator/tricorder of the EXPLORATION KIT from AMT -- too small, not nearly accurate, but I ran around the back yard with those silly things velcroed to my belt and slung over my shoulder more often than I care to admit. :)

In an interview with the Playmates Toys Trek line manager (I think it's in the current Toy Fare mag), he claimed that getting Pine's likeness right was the hardest of all the new movie characters. Clearly, they didn't work hard enough.

just saw some cereal boxes that had ads for mailaway red or blue shirts, lol

Nothing makes me feel more like an 8 year old than playing "Cereal Roulette"...and losing.

I picked up a box of Apple Jacks (also making me feel like an 8 year old...) to get my "Beam-Up Badge".

I got rooked...:unsure

I was hoping for the Command insignia, of course, but would have settled for any Star Fleet one...and I got the Klingon insignia.

Rats...

It's a LED flashlight. On the Klingon badge, you push the red logo in the center and the LED lights up at the top. For the Star Fleet ones, I'm assuming that's the button shown on the illustration.

I guess that's why they have the division logos so high on the badge, to be illuminated better by the internal LED.

No sound FX, and while I didn't expect it, they kind of lead you to think there's a display base as shown in the illustration, but there isn't.

No hook on the back, no keyring fob...kinda useless, actually, even as a toy...but I'll keep getting them anyway...dammit...
