Playmates toy instruction sheets hint at fuctions of Abrams-movie Trek props

Playmates has put up an elaborate site to pimp its toys for the upcoming movie

http://www.startrek.playmatestoys.com/

These include hires pics of the toys as well as PDF downloads of their instruction sheets.

For the phaser, we get our first visual confirmation that the barrel swivels (although it's manually in the toy, and I"m betting automatic in the prop)

The communicator shows a manually flipping lid (even though the Star Trek Enterprise lid was automatic? Hm...). In any case it shows where the buttons are supposed to be.

The tricorder toy actually has spring-open flaps.

Re: Playmates toy instruction sheets reveal prop functions?

Cool toys, all. But I'm not very happy about the bridge playset business. You have to purchase 18 separate action figures to complete the playset, as most of the various bridge stations are packed with the action figures (see below). I think only ten of the station pieces come with wave one of the figures, with the second wave planned for the fall with the remaining pieces. Of course, a second wave assumes wave one sells well.

The 12" action figz look great!

Probably also worth mentioning that Kelloggs breakfast cereals is running a promotion where you get a "beam up badge" in the box.....

These resemble the chest badges but light up in the three division colors for some reason.

No idea if the badges function this way in the film (seems like that's more of a "TNG era" concept but who knows...)

That tricorder looks like it's going to kick all kinds of ass. And a phaser that finally plays a continuous sound when the button is held? I've been waiting for that for years. Even MR never bothered. These look like they might be really great. :thumbsup

So it's just pushing the button on the side of the phaser that changes the setting, I guess rotating the barrel is just for show? Not very exciting, or particularly well conceived, either. I think this is just further proof that Playmates gets licenses by being the lowest bidder.

Of course, these awesome head sculpts and Chex cereal tunics add even more proof...

...They did a great job on the hair, I guess. :rolleyes

So how close is the cereal badge to actual size? :love

Says 2.5" high on the promo sheet there.

Dunno how deep though, and if they're permanently affixed to the base. They seem to have a big whopping button on the side.

Also notice how the command symbol breaks out through the top there... is that right? :confused

No doubt about it, the sculpt for Capt. Kirk is the worst of the bunch. But the others, I think, are quite good.

I think the 3.75" figs are the ones I'll be going for. The next scale up doesn't offer much more detail, and offers less characters.

The problem with that is, if I can't have a half-decent looking Kirk figure, I don't see the point of getting the others.

Maybe by the time Star Trek XII comes out Diamond or someone else capable of making good looking toys will have the license. I just can't justify buying any bad looking figures just to settle on having something.

When it comes to the prop/role play items (in efforts in keeping this thread out of the OT) I think the comm and tricorder look okay, though I'd like to see better pics of the original props before making any final judgments. Sadly, I'll bet none of these are 1:1 to the original props. As for the phaser, I think the Rubie's looks a lot better. And yes, I realize that might be the first time anyone has accused Rubie's of doing anything better than someone else... :lol

Cripes, it's like Mattel's Superman Returns figs all over again. No matter which figure, which expression, which scale, not a single figure managed to carry even the slightest Brandon Routh likeness. Their Marlon Brando figure looked great, especially for the scale, which was a genuine surprise, but the Man of Steel himself gets shafted?

All of the crew gets immortalized in plastic while Kirk himself gets a lumpy POS to call his own. Why didn't they scan the actors like AA did for their Enterprise and Nemesis figs?

Well, I suppose with that flipping phaser tip you could always see whether or not your opponent was firing stun or "vaporize" shots...
The tricorder and communicator look kind of cool, just not "trek" to me yet.
Maybe in time they will be. I hated the dustbuster design on TNG but may be the only person on the planet who liked the Ent D. I am highly biased though.

The Kellog's insignae (?) may be the only props I get from this film, unless i totally fall in love with it.
I have to remind myself that it took five movies to get to the assault phaser in the first round of films... So maybe there is hope. Ship refit, new phaser props, bridge redesign...
Thanks for posting the info!

I would think Playmates got the license because they paid Paramount the most and can hit specific price points on the products as well as target release dates in stores. They can also produce the numbers needed for vast distribution, even if their products aren't the best. It also leaves room at the top for some more boutique licensees to come in (like MR did) and make "higher end" versions of pieces for much more money.

The original TNG phasers were ugly as all hell, no doubt, but I liked the Cobra phasers enough (not as much as the Dolphin phasers) and my absolute favorite starship of all time, across all sci-fi franchises, is the Ent D.

Hot damn do I love the Ent D. You've no idea how jealous I am of your experiences on TNG.

I liked the Enterprise-D as well! :)

Never thought that people would hate it so much... to me she seems massive and stately, like the interstellar cruise ship that she is. A city in space.

A lot depends on the miniature and how it is photographed... all the early ILM stuff for the pilot looks good, but too much of the Image G stuff that was composited on video looks terrible. The first two seasons especially. :unsure

Later the compositing got fixed, but they switched to that 4 foot model with the obvious hull plating, and that really hurt it. Makes the ship look really small.

My big beef is that they never really took advantage of how big that ship is. Ed Whitefire did some early interior deck plans that have multi-level spaces, gardens, recreation malls, a MASSIVE hangar deck in the primary hull that's like some kind of Superbowl parking lot... :lol

But all we ever saw on the show was these tiny rooms. Left over from Star Trek the Motion Picture, depicting a ship HALF the length and a tiny fraction of the volume! :eek

Ah well, TV budgets. What are you gonna do. :unsure

And I also liked the Dustbuster and Cricket phasers, so there. :p
