So a buddy of mine back home has gathered a few others and will be doing cartoon-style turtles. We've talked about doing a group turtle project for awhile, and more recently have gotten pretty serious about it. So much so, that shortly before leaving for the army, we aquired original TMNT cartoon seasons via DVD of a dying local blockbuster.
Man, re-watching those episodes brought back memories. Still ALOT better and more imaginative then most crap on TV nowadays...
Anyhoo, I had attempted to do a quick build around this time frame, ending in miserable failure. I think the only thing I kept was the "master" blade I made for sizing and scale purposes.
However, since I have roughly 6 months to even get this thing ready, I've started thinking about a somewhat extensive build. I've already figured going the sculpted and molded route, which would be relatively cost effective, given that the forearms, shoulder bells, blades AND shins are all symetrical to each other, making it only necessary to produce one mold of each...minus the helmet of course.
As for the soft parts, my buddy is going to be sewing together that portion, and I imagine I can just use light material black Gi pants. Going for a true cartoon style to match the rest of the group.
While I'm particurly comfortable with resin casting, I have yet to really delve into any significant fiberglass casting. I (or we) attempted to fiberglass cast a belt box for our sektor/cyrax belt box mold. Although it formed pretty well, and was really rigid, it was using conventional fiberglass matt and resin found at Home Depot. I can't say I did it right when laying it, but the outer surface, long after it cured, remained tacky and rendered the casting un-usable.
The reason I bring up fiberglass casting, is that I wish to produce fiberglass pieces for both strength/flexability purposes as well as to attemp cold casting, which I feel would be ideal for this project. As for the individual blades, I'd prefer them to also be cold-cast resin, but I am not sure if it will have the same metallic affect as the fiberglass.
My real questions in this thread really are:
-For producing quality fiberglass castings from a silicone based mold, what is the proper technique and fiberglass brands/types for this?
-For cold-casting, can solid resin pieces work with an aluminum powder mix and result in the equal, if not, near non-dissernable surface finish (after "polishing")
As for the helmet, I haven't entirely thought it out, but I imagine I'll be using the MDF sandwich technique for this as well, combind with more durable chavant or oil based clay. MDF for the rest of the pieces as I have considerable experience with this.
In the end, I want to have a pretty "realistic" yet, true to cartoon feel without being overly quarky. I really want to see this thing actually appear proportionate, and correct in the end.
During the time I go for this project, I will be continuing my Darktrooper...but thats a different story..
So any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
