Peter Jackson - The Hobbit - Video Blog..

I can't wait for this! Lord of the Rings was what officially got me into costuming!

The brought a near tear to my eye. I have faith in ya, Pete!

Excellent video. So awesome to see Ian McKellan back at Bag End. :thumbsup I want to move in to the Rivendell set. :lol

I watched this on FB before work this morning - very cool, exciting times. I'm hyped already and looking forward to more production diaries!

Watching this brought a tear to my eyes. It is amazing seeing the sets again and Thanks to Peter for making these blog vids :thumbsup I love what the first shot being filmed was. ;)

Wait. He's not making Bilbo's home look like an over lit Apple store? Talk about a waste of potential. I would have recommended shooting the Elrond estate in a brewery. It certainly looks more like a home of the elves than a futuristic faster than light starship engineering room.

...I'm sorry. I couldn't help it. Seeing all this attention to detail in preserving the original look of the trilogy in this video just shows that PJ and crew care about attention to detail and they're not going to cop out by going to an out-of-place local set (well, so far).

Re: The Hobbit - First Video Blog From The Set!

Dang it! I figured it would be hard for this community to miss this. Sorry, RPF. Your power is yet again greater than I thought :p

Here's attention to detail:

There's a quick shot in there somewhere of the Sting prop that Freeman will be using. Notice that it does NOT have any writing on the blade. It has a single flowing line where the writing was on the LOTR version.

And this isn't even something from the book, it was something they did in the design of LOTR. Since Sting was only ever just a long knife for the elves that made it, it didn't have a proper name like Orcrist or Glamdring. The name was given by Bilbo, and was later carved onto the blade by the elves at Rivendell. The writing on the LOTR prop says (in Elvish) "Sting is my name, I am spider's bane." (after the events of The Hobbit)

This proves (in terms of story) that the writing on the blade was added in between the two films, so they went back and made a new, clean-bladed version for this film, despite the fact that no one in audience ever knew what the sword said on the blade. For all the audience knew, the knife always had that etching on the blade. But they made the change anyway.

Attention to detail. And we here on the RPF are probably the only ones that would have noticed something like this (I have two different versions of Sting downstairs).

Good eye. And that gave me chills. I think this one will be better than the trilogy. Just because it is a simpler story from a certain POV. I think PJ did an AMAZING job cramming LOTR into 3 movies. Having 2 to make one book? Well I really think this is gonna blow everyones minds. The way the PT SHOULD have done. :cool

For a bunch of folks who accuse Lucas of a money grab constantly you sure are ignoring the money grab here. Two movies, pfft.

I hope you guys enjoy them.

I just don't see how these can ever compare to the Rings Trilogy. As great as it is, it's enough.

This should have been made before the others or not at all.

I'm so happy about this..I got all nerded up watching this vid blog. These guys are true artists...they don't make a film..they make a world and film it. Big difference IMO. And PJ is exactly the right person to helm this.

Well i for one can't wait, its great to see the world being revisited, and actual honest to god sets and props, woohoo, at least peter knows to put that damn green screen down from time to time

Agreed!

My tastes in movies that are able to "take me away" to somewhere different are very limited, SW, and LOTR to name a very few.

LOTR over SW as I viewed them as an adult. Very impressive to do for someone who watches all the behind the scenes stuff he can get his hands on.

I WILL MAKE IT TO NEW ZEALAND SOMEDAY! Take the red carpet tour and hopefully run into a few great folks from this forum down there.
