PATCHES: who makes 'em, what are the options

I am working up a patch design to be embroidered... who here has some experience with patches?

I have questions, such as how easy is it these days to do a patch with an element that breaks out of the edge, such as a foot sticking out of the circular edge.

Also how how sophisticated can I get with color, on an embroidered patch? Can I have "gradients"? Or is it all still flat color areas, and you have to be careful about edges and such?

Practical tips accepted. :cool
