Parts I'm using for a Mal Pistol from a SMOKER ..... WHY ME!!!

Hello Folks

Well I just got my package in the mail with the lot of used Taurus 85 parts I purchased to use for my Mal's Pistol Project. I immediately opened the box and the first thing I noticed was that the whole thing reeked of Stake Cigarette Smoke. After throwing the box and packaging in the garbage bin OUTSIDE the house I'm wondering how do I clean the stink off of these "metal" parts. Right now I have them all closed off in "new" airtight zip lock bags but I want to get them out of there rather soon.

So does anyone out there have experience with such and it you do would you please offer some cleaning recommendations that will help me out.

Thanks

I received a LOTR sword like that. I wiped the blade with an oily rag and sprayed the leather with a LOT of Febreze. I'd spray some WD40 in that zip lock and then wipe them all down.

I have had a lot of success using baking soda. Find a sealable container large enough for the parts laid out in one layer and pop a new open box of soda in the container close it up and leave it somewhere warm for a few days.

After a few days you should find the soda has absorbed all the stink. I've used this method on injection, resin, vinyl and a few metal car kits. Hasn't failed me yet.

+1 for the baking soda. Repeatedly and heavily, with new batches. My experience was that it didn't remove 100%, but went a long, long way. I tried different methods - dousing the item in baking soda and sealing off for a few days in plastic bag. Covering the item in baking soda and setting it outside. Try different methods.

Use gun oil

WD40 works great for metal objects too!
For plastics, plain old Dawn dishsoap with a little lemon juice does the trick.
For fabrics and unfinished wood, nothing but time will truly work, but febreese helps knock it down. Best case scenario here is put it in a sealed plastic bag with baking soda, or in the case of fabrics, a trip to the dry cleaner.

It is 2013, WTF smokes indoors anymore?

bleach is corrosive to metals and many plastics. Bad Idea.

I should have been more specific - clean with a weak solution of bleach (which is a strong oxidizer) then use whatever oil you prefer (my choice is wd-40 or break free C L P (clean lubricate rust preventative) I the bleach will strip out the offending nicotine residue the oil will prevent ant oxidation from the bleach , I have used this process to strip residue from weapons in the past and it works. keepthe bleach down to a10 to 15 percent solution.

Hello Folks

Just want to Thank Everyone for their suggestions!! Right now the parts are "buried" in a sealed container of baking soda. I have to get a can/bottle of Gun Oil sometime this weekend for part two (or try that bleach bath) and then the oil but I will post the result.

Oh by the way, any suggestions of how to cut the hammer thumb piece out to mimic the look of Mal's Pistol's Hammer. I figure on attacking the piece with my Dremel and a cutting wheel (wheels more then likely) and then grinding the remains smooth somehow. Any suggestions on better approaches would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Again!!!!

Hoppes no9, then gun oil.

You may want to make your initial cut with a hack saw, and then you can dremel and sand paper it smooth.

Your smell will probably be gone after all that but you could try putting it in the freezer for a period of time.

My friend used to put his pants in there instead of washing them. I think he fabreezed them first. Because they would lose their shape, patina, and whatever else GQ told him. I guess it worked.

Why, I do. Only in my office though. Y'know, the room where the wife makes me keep the only things I own that would be of interest to you all. :lol:thumbsup

On topic:

Smoke is attracted to metal, so that would explain why your gun parts are so permeated with the smell. Tobacco smoke residue is primarily tar, so a good degreaser, followed by a preservative oil should fix you up quickly.

That's what we used for the metal after a house fire when I was a disaster technician, and there was never a complaint of a lingering smell.

Hello Folks

Well a friend of mine knew I wanted to modify the Taurus Hammer I told him I was going to get in the mail so he searched and found this little video for me;

Gunsmithing - How to Bob the Hammer on a S&W Revolver - YouTube

Ooops please forgive me if posting YouTube links is against the rules, I looked and didn't see anything in regards to such so I assumed it was okay. The practice is called "bobbing the hammer" and it appears to be a quite common practice. Its also to my surprise quite easy to do and the best part is I have all the equipment already on hand to do it. Hope the above helps out anyone who was thinking of doing the same thing.

I'm going to hazzard a guess here and say smokers.

Let's not bash people for what they do in their own homes and just help this guy with his problem.
I agree with that totally...let people do what they do....no one needs to get others upset over something like that.....we are here to help others the best we can , without judging or putting personal feelings into being informative...:cool:thumbsup

What your smelling is a generic version of cosmoline, it's a preservative/rust preventative put on guns and gun parts whenever they are put into storage for a long time.

Simply cleaning it off will make the smell go away.....

There are all kinds of methods for removing it, if the parts are small enough you can dump them in a pot of boiling water. After a few minutes the parts will be as good as new.

I was unaware there was a version of cosmoline with that particular stench. Nice bit of info. :thumbsup
