Palantir?

I hate these threads where someone asks, "Anyone done one...?"

But I'm also a bit of a hypocirte. Anyone done one?

I saw this...

I'm wondering if an undrilled swirly-patterned bowling ball wouldn't work well. (Or even a drilled one, if the holes are hidden by the stand.)

A bump for this...

After looking for some swords and books, this was the next prop, what came into my mind... So, I got a clear acrylic ball, and thought about to add a transparent foil with saurons eye, and a small light behind it...

But it should look a little bit darker, so anyone know, if theres a transparent colour out, what allows the ball to look dark like the palantir in the movie, but it should be a little brighter, if the light is on...

EDIT: I tried a little bit and made some tests with a print on normal paper. I used a lightsource behind the clear ball and it looks very nice... What bothers me, is that the ball is too clear... It should have a darkblue colour what looks like a darker fog in front of the eye...

any good ideas? Any idea how to make a light-transparten 3dimensional eye?!?

Here are 2 pics, one with flash, one without in front of a lightsource...

Cool idea!
What's the diameter of the ball?

Try spray tint for indicators. Dark and transparent.

Thanks... About 18 cm I think...

I used black/dark blue paint for the back and I think I will try some dark blue light cloth to imitate those dark clouds inside the palantir...

I tried some lightsources till I decide to use a LED fairy light...

Not the best result for saurons eye, but I dont want to have an acurate replica, just an atmospheric light in my LOTR corner... :$

Wow - that looks really good.

More pics please and a tutorial if you have the time. I want to make one too.

Thanks... Im not 100% finished with the palantir... When I have time and I have finished the palantir, I will try to post some pics...

But for a replica I try to find a glass ball or something made from resin for a replica without the eye...
