Padme Loyalist Surcoat Fabric

Oh my gosh, this fabric.

So, I'm in the early early early planning stages of making Padme's Loyalist Committee gown and surcoat from Episode II, to eventually go with my partner's Anakin costume. The construction of the costume looks to be straightforward, if detail and time intensive, and I'm not too worried about that.

Here is the costume, just for a refresher:

What REALLY concerns me is that velvet burnout/devore fabric used to make the surcoat. I know that it was a white silk/rayon velvet that they dyed to get that color, and I know that others have found it in the past. However, these days, it seems like it's impossible to find. I'm aware that I could make a template and do the burnout pattern myself with the right fabric and FabricEtch, but before I commit to such extensive work, I was wondering if anyone knew of other places that might sell it online?

Thanks!

Don't know sources for the fabric, but here's another ref pic from an exhibit I attended. Maybe it will help somehow.

Good luck!

That is AWESOME. What an excellent shot! I'll add it to my folder of references! Thank you so much!!

It's looking more and more like I'll have to do the devore design on my own - which means I'll have a thread dedicated to constructing it here once I start. :)

I really appreciate it. I hope I can get to start on this within the next year or so. I've got a few others to go first. :) But I've been bitten by the bug! XD

Looks like a velvet brocade, from the way it moves in the film, it's fairly heavy (i.e. the real stuff, not polyester).

Yeah, it was similar. It's a velvet devore, silk and rayon. The place that used to sell it no longer offers it, sadly! They also probably interfaced it with a heavier interfacing, plus the lining. Winter costume much? :)

I think a good lot of the fabric, especially ones used for Padme's outfits, were heavy upholstery fabrics originally; things like for couches, curtains/drapery, and carpets. I got a good look at one the royal dresses she wore in PM some years back on display and they looked very reminiscent of a fabric I found online not too long ago meant for couch covering.

That sounds reasonable. I've been involved in making some historical costumes, and fabric for royal costumes are often found in the upholstery department.

I have or had a swatch of that fabric in it's original color. It's a white cotton denim with black velvet burnout. I scanned the swatch way back with the intent to make a print of the repeat and put it up on Spoonflower. Would that be something that might interest you, or would you want to stick with velvet?

I want it to be film accurate, and for submission into Rebel Legion, it must be velvet of some sort. Thank you, though! A scanned swatch could help me create a template, though!
