Oh no the new Dredd Movie could be a stinker

Those helmets look like they sit high up on the Judges' heads. The 'eyes' are way up there near the brows!

Kinda diggin' the look of the new Lawgiver. More reminiscent of the 1995 handgun than I though it would be. :thumbsup

I'm not ready to pass judgement - especially based on a photo. Remember when the first image of Heath Ledger as Joker was released? Most were like "What the frack is that?" - and we all know how that turned out!
I'm not saying Dredd is going to be as awesome as TDK, I'm just saying that fanboys (and girls too!) can get a little pre-mature with their opinions based on limited information about a movie coming out.
Relax, time will tell!

Actually I'm 100% ready to give it a chance, just when that studio is behind something.....well I'm ready for the worst :lol

despite what ANYONE says about stallone's dredd, its the best of the two and the remake is only copying the same look

I just don't know how to feel... I love Dredd and the over-the-top boots, gloves, shoulders and helmets in the comics. However, if you popped that in the film the average joe would ask how on earth the Judges are supposed to move their arms about, or run... or do anything. It just wouldn't work as a pratical real-world police uniform.

BUT... This is Judge Dredd, if I can believe a dude in red and blue tights can fly, I can surely believe that a 50kg eagle made of bronze stuck to a gritty, battle hardened hero's shoulder wouldn't impede his ability to punch someone's lights out.

I do however, like the new look, I'm just worried about how close it is to now. Mega-City One is supposed to be full of fantastical machines, buildings, vehicles and robots. This film looks like their actually aiming for modern day, but with everything just worn down and grimy.

I hope I'll be nicely surprised by it all. If not, I'll keep looking towards the fan-made stuff :)

I don't have any problem with the costume (I prefer the eagles and the over-the-top design, but that's ok), but I still believe they should've hired someone WAY BIGGER for the role. Judging by those pics, we will have to put a lot of mental effort in order to envision him as Dredd and not a random judge.

Anyways, I'm really looking forward for this movie, I hope it doesn't suck

The shot where he's kicking looks great. Standing still, not so good. Which makes sense for a movie. I'd have liked to see the eagle worked in somehow but I think what they've come up with looks believable.

I think the best news is that he keeps the helmet on. I always thought the Stallone movie would have been better if Dredd had been played by a complete unknown who keeps the helmet on throughout. Market the mystery. Have Stallone on-board for the 'star-power' playing an additional character where the hidden face is less important.

As a long-time reader of all things Dredd, I can honestly say I couldn't care less about the actor not being some kind of beefy bodybuilder. IMHO the character suits being lean, lanky and mean, as the fundamental idea of Dredd is that he's a 100% physical incarnation of the Law itself - so he doesn't a very impressive physique to do the talking for him: His blind devotion and sheer mentality in itself is enough.

Clint Eastwood 15+/- years ago would've made for a sensible choice of actor in my mind. Old, grim and stringy enough to play the part, and with that Dirty Harry frown to go with it. Looks like Urban tries too hard to pull this off, I'd rather see them go with a more characteristic-looking actor. Doesn't really matter if he's famous or not. Stallone sucked as the judge anyway, and the whole movie turned out to be a steaming pile.

In regard to the costume: Don't care much for all the straps and extra padding on the chest, and I think they should've kept something more like Stallone's shoulderpads for this version too: huge, oversized, intimidating gear.

That being said, the helmet could've been somewhat smaller, and I don't care much for the fact that they kept the entire visor black, not keeping the bottom of it clear like in the comics - I don't see why they changed that.. Glad they kept the upside-down "V" though.

Still looks rubbish. If you can't match the original graphic imagery for impressiveness then don't make a movie of it. Leave it in its appropriate medium. Make up some other thing.

Relax, time will tell!

For a Dredd movie a couple of photos are all I need. If the suit and bike look like excrement - and they do, powerfully so - then that's it. There's no point going any further.

I agree his frown looks a little TOO forced. With Sly, it was a natural facial expression - plus he was bigger and had an overall better look - but to pre-judge the movie based on photos alone is juvinile and absurd. I will reserve judgement when I see it in theaters.

Nice to know we have time travellers amongst us! :thumbsup

The problem so far is that the new movie - not a remake - is NOT copying the same look.

At least the Stallone Dredd TRIED to make Megacity 1 LOOK like Megacity 1. They had huge buildings, Lawmasters that looked the part, H-wagons that actually hovered.

The H-wagons in this thing should be called G-wagons. Or just Fords.

I like the look of the new stills. The one of Dredd kicking the door in looks cool.

Regards the look, I can see why they've gone down this route and I think it's probably a good idea. Dredd looks like he's used to a lot of action. The helmet is closer to the comic and it's staying on, so they've already given themselves a running start at a good film.

Karl Urban has said some funny things to endear himself to the Dredd Heads "Batman's worst day is Dredd's average day".

I'm happy that this look can work as a good 'vision' of Dredd. I could pick little things I'm not keen on with the costume, but to be honest that would simply be personal preference and no more correct than what they've done. All in all I think it can work. The proof will be seeing it in motion and of course the little matter of story, direction, plot, acting etc.

I would say the general mood on the 2000AD boards (the comic Dredd appears in) has gone from sceptical hope to optimistic enthusiasm.

When we first started our Dredd fan film 'Judge Minty', we did consider altering our Judge costume, but decided that because it was a 20 minute fan film aimed directly at existing fans, we would try to make it as 'on the nose' as possible. If we were making a proper feature film that had to appeal to a larger market, we would probably have made changes as well.

Steven
P.S. I think the Stallone film got the city right (and possible better than this new film), but I'm more interested in them getting Dredd right, as there's already been a lot of films with cool future 'Mega Cities' in them.

Fingers crossed

Yep, that frown is too much.

I'm hoping this is just for the publicity photo and he's not doing it (much) in the film.

Steven, the problem is that if you have a great Dredd but he's not in his proper environment, then what you have is Robocop.

That's a fair point.

This is all my personal opinion. The City is definitely an element of Dredd's character, but for me it's not the most interesting one.

The thing I find more interesting is his determination, resilience and heroism, juxtaposed against the many negative aspects of the character, like being an uncompromising authority figure in an extreme police state.

I think the route they have gone with for the uniform may make that complexity easier to communicate to an audience, rather than being distracted by a outlandish costume.

I'll have to see the film to make a judgement on how detrimental setting the film closer to the present day is going to be. I admit the vehicles shown in sneak shots look waaaaay too ordinary. Hopefully the city itself will be okay to look at.

I know quite a few fans who believe Robocop is the film Dredd should have been ;) It could be said that Peter Weller's performance in Robocop, was at times much closer to Dredd than Stallone's performance.

Obviously it all depends on the film itself.

I've been a Dredd fan since Anthrax introduced him to me with "I am the Law" way back in the late 80s. That being said, I don't think the comic uniform would translate well into a serious, gritty on screen costume.

I like the more riding armor style look in the stills I've seen so far. I'm holding out hope that this is a good flick!
