Re: Predators preview online
Hmmm.... not feeling it yet... already with the "we wanted to improve on the original and make an even meaner Predator"... not making me feel good. That is almost always a sign of messing it up. And I love the whole thing of "we are trying to go a different direction than Arnold S" and yet... they have the minigun...
Kinda agree with everything youre saying here. The minigun idea not only rips off the more badass original concept from the first film (I always figured the gun was custom made by/for Blaine and only he could use it), but not only does this movie make minigums seem mainstream, but they also use the inferior T-2 style handgrip, which just, IMO, further insults the minigun idea from the original film.
The whole "alien planet" thing not only looks fake (why does it still look like Central America? Wheres all the colorful Avatar vegetation, or the more realistic blazing hot volcanic/desert planet seen in AVPR?), but i just dont like the idea of the Predators bringing their prey back home so to speak. Thats like going deer or turkey hunting, capturing the animal so you can drive all the way back home and shoot it in your own back yard... where's the sport? And why not kill your prey in its own environment where it can use it against you like in the first movie? More of a challenge eh? Maybe not for these lazy "super Predators" who just want to disorient the poor pitiful humans into panicking to where they wont put up much of a fight (on another note.... where the hell did they get all the guns and military grade equipment?). *sighs and groans....*
The idea of multiple predators hunting at once and teaming up, as indicated by the ridiculous amount of targeting lasers on one person, just seems flat out wrong and weakens the predator as an "all powerful hunter" as opposed to a solo mission where one can show off his true skill in combat. I mean hell... one was able to take down all but one of the commandos in P1; another was able to, less skillfully, take down the LAPD and various gangs (yeah, there were multiple preds on the ship, but i figured they were monitering the main pred's performance.); and another still was able to, most impressively, take down a crapload of aliens and cops and even stalemate the predalien before getting blown away in AVPR. They are portrayed as scary powerful and skillful hunters that pose a threat on their own. In this film, its just overkill having too many do all the action; no room for focusing on one and watching him develop through the movie. Thats why I didnt like AVP so much... 3 preds was just too many; shoulda been just one lucky guy getting an all expenses paid opportunity to hunt his species' favorite prey in an ancient holy site as a religious experience. But anyway.....
The casting is just terrible, plain and simple. Yeah the notable actors are good, but not for this kind of movie, the other no-names will likely live up to their pitiful expectations of getting killed off for our pleasure... so no bothering to make them likeable or sympathetic, and probably stock backstories to boot.
To me, this movie is likely going to be worse than either AVP movie, and AVPR was better than any series's sequel outside of Aliens IMO. I dont get it... usually RR does a good job, but this has "FAIL" written all over it.
Regardless, I'll still go see it because as usual I'm a sucker for this kind of stuff and will see it with no expectations except being entertained by awesome Predator action. Hopefully we'll be suprised and it will be good, like AVPR was somewhat, but likely it will be a mostly forgettable film that will stay around on peoples minds until the inevitable Aliens-only reboot comes out.
