Of Portals and Their Turrets - Portal 2 Turret

I'm glad you asked Leeland!

As a matter of fact there has! Not as much as I'd like, but some!

Here's what's happened since my last post;

I got the frame re-printed out along with some other parts in 250gsm card, and proceeded to cut out the pieces.

So many small pieces.

After absorbing this scene I resolved to get a start. I found out that it is a little harder to find pieces you need when they're in a big pile, might just cut them out as I go like I usually do next time.

The first thing I completed were the new detached support struts;

After that I moved on to the Eye component, this would be inserted into the housing where the audio components sit.

I then built the housing the eye itself would be inserted into, this sits on top of the housing where I assume the audio and processing components would sit.

After this, I moved on to the Audio assembly, there is a speaker on the front of this on the model, and since I'm not too sure what the rest of the space is used for, I am going to assume that the processor etc. would sit in here. I had a thought that maybe instead of using embedded electronics I could use a mini-ITX motherboard and be really smart, but the housing would be slightly too small.

I then moved on to the Fusion Core for the turret, I put together a whole version of this first, but Pepakura DERP'ed when I was unfolding it and it somehow ended up unbuildable due to some kind of tab misalignment. I don't blame Pepakura though, it was a terrible booleaned model. :p
So I made the pieces seperately and I'll join them together later on.

I've already shown this one before, it's the hopper, but it's a new photo so I thought "why not".

Now we're getting to the business end of this thing, the gun barrels;

And the gun box;

The gun pieces, being symmetrical, will be completed and just cast for the opposite side of the turret.
Now, here's the new frame that I built with the detatched struts;

So, here's an overview of all the completed pieces so far;

  • Hopper
  • Fusion Core (In pieces)
  • Gun Box
  • Gun Barrels
  • Support Frame (In pieces)
  • Servce Tag

There's quite a few things here which could probably use a comparison to the model from the game, so I may do a side by side with screenshots and renders for some pieces.

There are also parts of this which I may not end up working from the pepakura for, insofar as it would be much easier to replicate the eye assembly out of some PVC pipe and other materials than it would be to fill it with resin, smooth the whole thing out etc. but we'll see how I go.

:thumbsup

Also,

Anyone here from Australia? Where do you guys get your resin from?

Just thought I'd ask.

Just need to get my hands on some resin now.

Awwww yeah! :cool

I ran a couple of tests with this stuff on a Papercraft KH Dream Sword I made a while back, the first ending in what some might call failure, but what I call 'Awesome', wherein the fairly large amount of resin I poured in cured entirely in the tip of the sword.

The second test, I successfully rotocasted the resin onto the inside of the rest of the blade. :)

I'll begin using it on my turret soon. :love

Any updates Aphius? Been following yours for awhile :)
Well, not much that I have photos of right now. I'll upload them later, but as it is now I have slushcast resin on the inside of the parts on the frame I just built, as well as part of the power supply, the service tag and the hopper.

I've started applying Plasti-bond(Bondo) to the hopper to try and start smoothing it out, but I've found that I need a crap-tonne(a standard unit of measurement :p) to build it up enough to sand properly. So I'm working on that at the moment while I wait for more resin to continue on the other parts.

Also, below is a preview of the arm frame that I've just finished unfolding. :love

hey Aphius where did u get the resin from im a fellow aussie and it would be great
to havea source for this stuff.

This is looking great, and I'm following it with much interest! I don't suppose you're using the full version of Pep and are willing to make the unfolded models available somehow?

Looks good mate :)

If you run into a modelling snag, let me know. I may be willing to lend a hand.
Thanks Mecha, I should be good for modelling, I've done quite a bit in the past. :)

Right on man, whereabouts are you in the land of Oz? :p

I got the stuff I used online from Solid Solutions(look under 'Polyurethane Systems' in the Online Store menu), they're based in VIC, but they post Australia wide. Some stuff does add a dangerous goods charge to postage, but overall they were priced pretty well.

Another place that I've been recommended but haven't tried yet is Barnes(look under 'Resins' in the side category), they're more expensive than Solid Solutions but they have a shop front within driving distance from me so if you factor in not needing postage/obtaining my resin then and there, it pretty much equals out.

Thanks Ceric!

I am using the full version, and I have thought about possibly making the pep files available, but if I do it'll probably be when I've finished the turret.
That's for two reasons, one is that I am building it for a specific purpose and two is that really, I don't want someone finishing one before me! :p

thanks for the info aphius i hail from victoria so that will be a fantastic help and theres also barnes 45 mins from my house so now i have 2 fantastic locations thanks again!

No problem, I have noticed that Barnes tends to do Resin in odd sizes, so it depends what amount you're after as well.

I get the 4KG kit from Solid Solutions, but Barnes doesn't do 4KG kits, so I'd have to get 2 x 2KG from them and it's not as convenient, but once again, driving distance from my house. :lol

Great job on the pep for this so far!

Are there any recent updates on the turret? Didn't see any new photos on your flickr...
