It's made out of 300gsm cardstock and it's what I assume is full size, you can see my logic, which is based off an RPF thread in the album.
It's about 89 centimetres/35 inches high and about 28 centimetres/11 inches wide at the widest point.

Here's my scale:

I'm trying to accomplish roughly the same result as BlindSquirrel did here, with his 'Amazing Screw Head'.

I've not got much experience with Polyurethane resin and I'm trying to figure it out how much I'll need to slush cast a few coats on the inside to make it sturdy enough for some bondo and sanding on the facets.

Anyone done something of similar size in the past?

Re: Of Portals and Their Turrets - Polyurethane Resin Amounts?

1 gallon of resin will cover 12.5 square feet (1797 square inches) at 1/8" thick...

To get a rough idea of your surface area we will just assume the object is a 35x11 ellipsoid for simplification... That gives us 6.84 square feet (985 square inches) of surface...

So in a perfect world you would need approx ½ gallon to give a 1/8" thick skim coat, but that is only a very rough number as the object is not an ellipsoid and you will never be able to slush exactly 1/8" ;) I would say 1 gallon is a better estimate in the real world...

FYI I'm pretty tired right now and don't guarantee my number pushing, so don't take the above as confirmed fact...

Cheers for the info, even if you're totes tired. :)

I should at least be able to estimate roughly based off those figures. Any idea how much a gallon of resin weighs? The place I'm looking at sells resin by the KG, do you think 4KG would be enough?

Re: Of Portals and Their Turrets - Polyurethane Resin Amounts?

A rough number is about 8lbs or 3.6kg per gallon...

Haha, I was just talking to a buddy of mine about building one of these... The issue about the size of it came up, and I'm glad to see yours reflects our ideas about right. I'll let you get yours done first, but I may have to make one of my own, possibly on a smaller scale.

Good luck! I can't wait to see how this turns out :)

Sweet, I was hoping to get about 4KG, it gets cheaper around that amount. :p

Hey, I'm not going to stop you from making one, there's already someone else making one and he's way ahead of me. :lol

On the subject of someone else making one, my friend Ryan is a good ways into an absolutely superb build of a portal turret. He does beautiful work. Check it!

Portal Turret - a set on Flickr

I've mentioned Ryan previously in this thread actually, his build is pretty sweet, we've commented on each others Flickr sets. :p

I'm jealous as he's super far ahead of me despite our starting roughly at the same time. :lol

Are you going to put this in the baby's room?

Unfortunately I don't have a baby's room to put it in, but I was thinking of making the box to put it in when I don't want to display it. :p

Are you guys planning to start over after how much the Turrets have been changed in Portal 2?

They even got a full skeleton under that shell how: http://i.imgur.com/FL7q0.jpg

Or are you gonna finish yours as P1 turrets?
To be honest I haven't even had a chance to play Portal 2 yet, but those are the first screenshots I've seen of the new turrets.

I have to say, those are pretty badass and I may be into the idea of starting again, but the new design is way more complex.

I think that I'll probably finish up my P1 turret because it's simpler, and then try and look into what it'll take to make a P2 turret accurately, because I'd be tempted to build the frame and all. :p

Re: Of Portals and Their Turrets - Polyurethane Resin Amounts?

Yeah the new detail and parts breakdown does make it much more tempting to build. I've actually considered starting building a turrent myself back when I stumbled on Ryan's flickr last year but laziness delayed me.

The new layout actually looks like it might be made fully functional.

Re: Of Portals and Their Turrets - Polyurethane Resin Amounts?

Yeah my turret will be of the old Version 1.0 design. I was originally hoping to have it finished before Portal 2 came out but work got crazy and I just wasn't able to finish it in time. It would have been a Ton of work to modify it to the new look so I'm sticking with the classic look. I'm really close to being finished with mine. Hopefully in the next 2 weeks or so.

Hey, give you a bit of FYI. I played the game over at a friends house. I got a good look at all four sides of the box. Remember the trailer I linked? On one of the sides of the box, they have the diagram of the turret in the baby's room with the parents in the daylight (at 44 seconds) and at nighttime (46 seconds, where it says "goodnight"). It's on the left side of the box. On the back and right side of the box appears to be some sort of schematic for the turret.

Re: Of Portals and Their Turrets - Polyurethane Resin Amounts?

Ok, that's interesting! I'm going to have to grab myself a copy and get a good look at the box myself. :-D

Cheers for the info. :p

You're welcome. FYI, the best place to look at all sides of the box is during

the chapter titled, "The Part Where He Kills You." There is a giant room that slides and crashed into a platform you're walking on. GLaDOS says, "Okay, we know its a trap. Let's get it over with." After you portal into the room, there are six Aperture Science Vital Apparatus Vents, in which six of the crap turrents are deployed. One of them is still in the box.
