Obi Wan Jedi Apprentice Saber

So recently I saw a facebook post with someone showing off his Obi sabers collection. He had prety much all of them, but someone pointed out he was missing the Jedi apprentice saber. To which I didn't know it existed. I'm not a book reader so thats the main reason, not that i dont want to, but I lack the attention span required for book reading.

Anyways I went the typical rabbit hole looking for refrences and well this is all i got.

All taken form 4 different book covers of the Jedi Apprentice series (Expanded Universe or Legends now a days).

There have been several replicas made already but I never use those as reference, mainly because is the right thing to do and also they have their own interpretation of the areas not seen in the pictures.

I have been reading a bit (cheating using chatgpt) on the wearabouts of this hilt before Episode 1; since in Episode 1 Obi used a different one. According to chatGPT the books say the following:

• In Book 5: The Defenders of the Dead, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon travel to the planet Melida/Daan. During the conflict there, Obi-Wan decides to leave the Jedi Order temporarily to help the local youth movement (The Young).
• When he makes this choice, he leaves his Jedi equipment—including his lightsaber—behind with Qui-Gon.
• After a period of time living with The Young, Obi-Wan is eventually rescued by Qui-Gon and returns to the Jedi Order in Book 6: The Uncertain Path.
• However, by then, his original lightsaber is no longer in his possession. Jude Watson never explicitly states what Qui-Gon did with that saber (it’s implied it was either kept at the Temple or dismantled), but Obi-Wan must construct a new saber upon his return, which is the one he wields later in the series and ultimately in Episode I.

So then Episode 1 happens and Obi Loses his saber in the duel of fates. He then proceeds to construct another one like the Episode 1 saber that we see in episode 2 till he is captured in Geonosis where he again loses it.

After this point my head cannon goes like this:

After he lost the Episode 2 saber he then needs to construct a new one. He goes to the temple and recovers the Apprentice saber and reconstructs it to build the one we see in episode 3 and so on.

So here is my take on the Apprentice saber:

I know the books do not show any buttons or greeblies to activate but that is some what not seen, and left to the imagination. Based on my head canon story, Obiwan took this hilt and reused parts of the pommel, emitter, screw detail and copper button to make his Episode 3 hilt. I know that the pommel and emitter are not exactly the same (as episode 3) but Im sure that the illustrators had the intention of making it look similar and are not to obseced with details like we are.

I think this hilt is very cool and would be a great addition to the Legends line (Dooku, Mara, Bane) that's comming next year.

Your work is excellent and I like the design. It looks like the artist crossed Obi-Wan Phantom Menace and LUKE SKYWALKERs Return OF The Jedi. I really don't see the Obi-Wan Star Wars saber... except that Luke's was a variant.

That's not a criticism on your beautiful work or the coolness of the saber... the original artist obviously wasn't a detail person. I still want it, though!!! I'll be watching for the thread!!

In fact, I just checked the image from the book, then flopped it horizontally. Perfect match, in regards to the reflections on the emitter’s chrome tape.

That would be a starting point.

I did use Luke's grip as a starting point. And yes it is clearly based of Lukes V3, and since Lukes ROTJ morphed from the ANH Obi, it is all connected somehow.

Of course, a great deal of the artwork in both licensed novels and comic books uses the source material—the films—as a starting point. Publicity photos of the actors are repurposed, and painted or drawn with different clothes and circumstances to reflect a specific story. Poses are recycled, and droids, ships, and props are referenced and then modified to create new, story-specific variants.

That’s clearly what happened here. The artist needed to create a saber for young Obi-Wan, so he grabbed the FROM STAR WARS TO INDIANA JONES book for reference, and created a mish-mish of Luke’s V3 ROTJ prop and elements of the Obi-Wan TPM prop (such as the shape of the metal grip cutout in the center section).

There ya go. Just add an Obi TPM aluminum shroud with the cutout around the center grip, and a TPM-ish bottom cap to the pommel, and that’s basically it.

guabe Yeah definitely used that as reference. My two favorite lightsabers are the Obi-Wan TPM and the Luke ROTJ, so I'm all in for a mashup! It's going to be an awesome project!!
