i'm building 2 anh obi wan sabers (one weathered and one as new version). i've seen various replicas of these and some have the 2 complete transistors (ie, transistor and the washers) and some have 1 missing a washer round one of the transistors.

what should i go with? both with washers? or one without a washer?

It's a personal preference. One of the washers fell off during filming so both options are 'correct'.

It's my personal preference that the saber always have a washer on both of the transistors, but since you're building two, you can do it both ways. The clean one could have both, while the weathered version only has the single washer. It sort of makes sense that part of the wear and tear that created the weathered appearance is also why the washer is missing.

yeah i was thinking about doing that. i think i'll go with both versions having both washers though, as that's how it was at the start of the film (so that's how it was meant to be) and only didn't have it in other shots due to it being lost at some point

The distinguishing factor should probably be whether you are building a replica of the prop as such, or a replica of the lightsaber. In the latter case the prop is kind of just a stepping stone towards a fictitious end, and you have the freedom to build a sort of fantasy hero-prop in an idealized state.
