So, my wife and I road race as a hobby. After I picked up the new BS X-wing helmet, I started thinking about custom paint jobs for our road race helmets. My wife's is currently in progress, and then I'll be starting on mine. You can't really do a 'replica' of an open face X-wing helmet on a full-face road race helmet, so I'm calling them 'inspired' instead. I am trying to stay true to the markings, and especially the hand-painted vibe and war warn look...
After looking at a bunch of examples, my wife decided on Rey's salvage helmet from TFA for her source material.
Starting with a blank slate, I transferred a basic outline of some of the shapes to the helmet.
Then it was time to start with some color. I had ordered a set of vinyl graphics online, hoping to save some time and be able to apply the vinyl, do some weathering and clear over the top. Unfortunately, the 'vinyl' turned out to be sticker paper... unuseable for the task at hand, so I ended up with some overpriced stencils. Oh, well....
It's a good idea to start with the lightest color, so first up were the Alliance crests, 'V' circles and some borders in yellow. I then added in the 'comet' with sharpie and chart tape. Not sure if "comet" is the correct term, but I've seen it called that in other threads...
Next up was the lighter blue...
Then the darker blue...
Finished up today with some detail work, and the 'V's...
Still have one more color to shoot tomorrow, then some weathering and a coat of satin clear, but things are coming along.
