New Zealand Iron Man -(update 1.20.14)- display upgrade

Re: New Zealand Iron Man - My build thread (update - filling the gaps pt1)

Tedium extremis for a couple of days masking things. Cheaper than painting things twice mind you.

I have my first finished piece to show, complete with cardboard bolts. Im pleased with the finish I've acheived. The pictures dont show the shine, but it's decent, and smooth.

I intend to 'outline' the parts in black paint, and to weather and damage the suit (mainly to hide any real damage that occurs!).

Hey Dynofiend,

Where in Wellington you from? I'm in Wellington as well!

That is looking great mate! The boot looks really nice, so if all the other parts are coming out like that you're doing well.

Re: New Zealand Iron Man - My build thread (update - some pieces painted)

Thanks mate!

Here's a few more pieces. They do seem to be coming out quite well. Here are the chest, shoulders and back. If you look closely at the back section, you can see the fan in it. You can see my finished shoulder bolts which im pretty pleased with. The photo with the tape measure is to show the reflection in the paint.

Re: New Zealand Iron Man - My build thread (update - painting has begun!)

Nice, what did you use for the shoulder bolts?

Also...Pssst, it appears you left your door open! :p

Re: New Zealand Iron Man - My build thread (update - painting has begun!)

Awesome work buddy. The guys at the party won't know what hit 'em!

Re: New Zealand Iron Man - My build thread (update - painting has begun!)

Thanks guys!

The shoulder bolts were the base of a drinks can, with an upside down fridge magnet inside, and ontop of that, a small upside down trim piece left over from a flat pack set of shelves. The shelves in the pictures below actually lol. Just junk I had in my garage basically!

Here's some more painted parts. Ive done the 'torso' so far. Pretty pleased with how it's going. I also stuck my old arc reactor, and then unibeam in there to see what it looked like. Turns out it looks awesome :love

Wow! That looks fantastic all together mate. The paint job is definitely coming together.

I'm using the same process of PVA/65D plastic coating on my Cap America helmet, hoping to start the plastic coating this weekend and currently doing the PVA layers, do you have any tips? The only thing I'm worried about is the short pot life of the 65D causing me to rush it and make a botch job.

definitely subscribed!! good work

Re: New Zealand Iron Man - My build thread (update - painting has begun!)

Great build. I'm really liking that mirror finish. :thumbsup

Re: New Zealand Iron Man - My build thread (update - painting has begun!)

Thanks all for the comments, it is really appreciated :) It really will be a bit of a shame to weather it all and give it damage. But I think it will really lift the suit to another level once done.

With the PVA, I have been very generous with it. I just slapped it on making sure I got every surface, including the edges. I wasn't worried about uneveness, as when it dries it basically all soaks in and leaves an even coating whatever I seemed to do. I think my PVA was slightly 'watery' as standard which may have helped.

With regard to the 65D I have never used it, but I know xrobots has some good tips on his site xrobots.co.uk around using the stuff. I opted not to use the flexible urethane I procured, as it peeled too easily from the foam, even when using a PVA base coat. I have just used PVA, then paint.

No plasti-dip or anything? PVA glue->paint->clear coat?

Yup, just that. Four coats of PVA, two thin layers of grey undercoat. Two thin layers of red top coat. Once thin layer of clear coat. Done.

Ive not even polished it. I tried using some Autoglym polish on a piece, and it made it even shinier, but I was worried that the fillers and chemicals in the polish would make it hard for my 'weathering' paint effects to adhere to, so opted not to polish the entire suit.

Autoglym doesn't appear to be sold in the USA. What is it? A wax? Polish?

Suit is looking great. I'm maybe halfway done assembling my Mk4, I love to see others of the same!

I love all the details you put on the Torso. It really makes it look so legit.

Yeah mate, its a polish, but has a high cutting and filler content so you get a great finish with minimal effort.

Thanks man, my approach has been to try and add things which are low cost, but high impact. I think details really make a difference. My budget is small, but I have a long time to build it in. My hours and ideas are free, and with all the junk I seem to collect, most of the parts have been free too :lol

Re: New Zealand Iron Man - My build thread (update - torso fully painted)

Awesome build man. I am brand new to this site and to building costumes but you have inspired me. How can I get those pep files you mentioned in your first post? I would like to build a foam suit as well.

Thanks.

Re: New Zealand Iron Man - My build thread (update - torso fully painted)

Coming along nicely man. You got me thinking about fans now. I dunno why but for this suit I didn't even give them a second thought till now.

Looking forward to seeing this all come together. Keep up the good work :)
